"Love the doubter, hate the doubt"
I'd like to address a religious topic today regarding doubt. On several occasions, I've seen some variant of the following question posed towards a Mormon audience: "I don't quite believe everything the church teaches. I have doubts about some fundamental c...

My perspective on God, if there is a God.
God is love. Or so I'm told. I tend not to believe in any particular deity or supreme being, but I do not presume to know for sure that such an entity does not exist. My sense of "spirituality" has changed a lot over the past...

TIL it's now quite easy to make tax-deductible donations to Haskell community infrastructure.

(Haskell infrastructure people, holler if this looks fishy to you.)
If you want to make a concrete contribution to the maintenance and development of Haskell community infrastructure, including the hosting and deployment of community resources, from Hackage to Hoogle to the Haskell Platform and beyond, the best thing to do is find a way to volunteer and get ...

The catch is that it doesn't "count" if you do it on your own.

Today is a historic day for gay rights in the USA. Section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act has been deemed by the Supreme Court of the United States to be unconstitutional, which means that the federal government will now re...

I'm doing a small #Haskell class on #Yesod fundamentals at #BayHac today. Slides online: http://goo.gl/gMrmnv

Hehe. I've played with Idris, but not so recently. I used a single colon to hopefully cue that this was not A Real Haskell Type Signature.

FP Haskell IDE  -

Hey FP Complete, I'm teaching an introductory class on Yesod at BayHac 2014 next month, and I'd like to have everyone in the class (with a laptop handy) follow along using the FP Complete IDE, community edition. I'm not sure how many will be there, I think 40 is a reasonable estimate. Will the community edition IDE be responsive if an additional 40 people are simultaneously editing, compiling, running, and viewing their own version of a simple Yesod web app? Is this a load spike on the free edition infrastructure that would require additional resources?

You can email our support address about it in the future. I've emailed our sysadmin and gave him a heads-up about this one already.

Reason first
I vaguely recall once being instructed on how one could teach a certain religious concept. It involves a visual demonstration, consisting of something like a narrow tube or container, a small wooden figurine of Jesus, and various other small items. The pupi...

The way angular momentum works is so counterintuitive, it never fails to fascinate.

There are a few sequel posts that I am going to write. Does anyone have any particular interest in one of the following?

* "I know the church is true" considered harmful
* The romantic axiom: Love is supreme
* The gay axiom: Pride
* The logician's axiom: Reason is supreme

The latter three are elaborations that explain some of the meaning behind my blog's name. I suspect that of these 4, "The gay axiom: Pride" will be the most worth writing/reading.
I'd like to bear my testimony, I know the church is true. I wonder how old I was when I first uttered these words. Any Mormon who regularly attends church has certainly heard this staple opening line numerous times, most ofte...

No, none in particular. And the Band Played On is an excellent book focused on that period of time, though more on the AIDS crisis. The Wikipedia article seems a fine place to start (and seems to mostly jive with my experience of living through that time, being a politically active young gay man)
