..................... Tips for Google Plus .....................
..................... For all my new friends .....................

Circles
Make a lot of these. That way you can add a lot more people. Circle anyone you find interesting, or who shares a topic that you enjoy, or who circles you first. You can then use these to divide up your news stream.

For example I follow +Trey Ratcliff for great photos, +Nathan Statz for amusing posts, +Robert Scoble for opinions.

Finding who to circle can be a challenge, but you can use sites like http://gpc.fm/ (by +Ralf Rottmann) to find lists or you can use the search bar to track down specialists.

Formatting
See this post? It's nice to read. Google+ has an edit function and included text formatting like italics and bold. Simply put asterixes (*) around text to make it bold. Put underlines (_) around text to make it italics.

With that said there is now no excuse for sloppy posting. Google+ is most often used for debate, so make sure your posts make sense and then people will read them. Spell correctly, use good grammar and make it interesting to look at.

Also use the '+' sign to tag people. Get their attention specifically; eg. +Sam Buckingham Jones had better get ready for the Table Tennis showdown.

Public vs Limited
Whenever you post you get the option to allocate circles. The biggest trick coming over from Facebook is to make your posts public (you can do this by selecting the 'Add More People' when you post and adding 'Public'.)

Don't stick with the same group of friends, or there will ever only be about 20 of you commenting on the same old stuff.

Also when you see something interesting or useful (hopefully like this post) use the Share button and spread it around. Chances are other people will find it interesting/useful too.

.......................................................................

Profile
Essentially your profile should give people an idea of who you are and what you do. All this kind of information goes under the Introduction tab. As you can see, mine is quite long. You can include links and extra paragraphs to really show your interests.

Your tagline will come up when people hover over your icon; when people search for you however your Occupation is displayed.

Remember you can edit your profile to show different people what you want. For instance I display my phone number to my fellow students and friends. Design your profile how you will; outgoing or secretive. But put some effort in and more people will follow you.
