"Global warming is arguably the defining scientific issue of modern times. However, it is very seldom appreciated how the science of climate evolved. Many of the popular discussions of global warming, including intensive media coverage or documentaries like Al Gore’s Inconvenient Truth go back only a decade or two. However, the fundamental physics that would be required to make sense of how human CO2 could cause Earth to warm actually has its roots going back nearly two centuries."
