Neat to see what the big players are doing and planning. For the hobbyist, I'd recommend DJ Sure's EZ Robot. Wonderful interface and hardware package.
 
ROS+OpenCV is pretty good, as far as it goes, but it's like LAM without the P. Someone needs to write generalized motion planning routines that aren't specific to actuator and sensor geometries. Sadly that's hugely difficult.
