Two-time Dakar Rally truck-class champion Gerard de Rooy will contest the Africa Eco Race over the Dakar Rally in 2018, Petronas Team De Rooy Iveco has announced.
The truck category frontrunner was a vocal critic of the 2017 route, having suggested that Dakar needs to rethink its presence in Bolivia after a number of stages were either cancelled or shortened due to the weather.
Petronas Iveco's main rival Kamaz has campaigned in both events - The Dakar and Africa Eco race - over the past few years, sweeping the two rally-raids in 2017.

Rally Raid organizer ASO announces Peru, Bolivia and Argentina for #Dakar2018 with start in Lima, Peru at 6th of January 2018.
January 2018 in Peru..... hhhmmm?? And going parallel inland along the coast is asking for it....
We had already enough stage cancellations during last events.....
Fans AND racers want what Dakar supposedly is: A long distance Desert Rally Raid with dunes, sand and heat!!
So, do not get this post as negative, just posting some facts with scientific background.
Did they check the climate prediction center (CPC) and ENSO? ENSO is a single climate phenomenon, it has three states, or phases, it can be in. The two opposite phases, “El Niño” and “La Niña,” require certain changes in both the ocean and the atmosphere
El Niño is officially over according to NOAA’s climate prediction center and La Niña is likely on the way! Because many La Niña events last two or three years, there is already a slightly enhanced probability of La Niña in 2017-18, if history is any guide. In other words the #RallyRaid2018 may be right in the thick of that......

With 9 month to go to #Dakar2018 here some current news out of Peru.
Peru’s president said late last week that the flooding is the worst for the country since one of the strongest El Niño years on record.
"There hasn’t been an incident of this strength along the coast of Peru since 1998,” President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski said in a statement Friday.
~
Authorities in Peru have temporarily closed 23 ports due to abnormal waves thought to be linked to a “coastal El Nino” weather pattern, as the country suffers its worst flooding in decades.
The closure through at least Wednesday was ordered by Peru’s Directorate of Hydrography and Navigation.
Scientists say the coastal El Nino, with ocean temperatures about 5C warmer than normal, has been causing heavy rains in the Andes, filling rivers to the brink and triggering the flooding.
At least 78 people have died and more than 10,600 houses have been destroyed in the flooding, according to the country’s Institute for Civil Protection.
The deaths occurred in floods or landslides in the South American country, where 1,900 kilometers of roads have also been destroyed.

While there was supposedly some talks/negotiation for #Dakar2018 to return to Peru (http://motor-bytes.com/PeruDakar2018 and http://motor-bytes.com/Dakar2018Peru) it is highly questionable with the fallout of of recent devastating downpour for this nation to stem logistics and financial burden for an event of this size considering the time-frame.
Flooding and mudslides caused by intense rains in Peru has now left at least 72 people dead. The scale of the destruction – the worst in recent memory – has seen more than half the country declare a state of emergency.

French veteran Stephane Peterhansel won the car crown for his 13th career title at #Dakar2017. Defending champion Peterhansel, who has won the Dakar six times on bikes and now seven times in cars, beat Peugeot team mate and compatriot Sebastien Loeb by five minutes.
“Yesterday, it was decided by a flat tire, and that was probably the turning point in this Dakar,” added the champion, who thanked Peugeot for letting their drivers race without team orders.

Stage 9 Salta - Chilecito cancelled. A massive landslide caused by thunderstorms has cut the road used to join the bivouac 40km north of Jujuy / 160km from Salta.
Most of the vehicles of the Dakar caravan will be able to reach the bivouac of Salta via an alternative route through San Antonio de los Cobres, extending the distance of the liason by 200km.
A part of the larger vehicles will not be able to use this road!
Tomorrow will be devoted to re-group the race caravan in Chilecito to continue the event with the 10th stage from Chilecito to San Juan.

Persistent bad weather conditions forced the organizer to neuter the #Dakar2017 further and change the course of stage 7 from La Paz to Uyuni.
Following the cancellation of stage 6 due to weather impact the day before the rest-day has stage 7 - a so called "marathon stage" - also some "re-designing" alterations.
Today's 161 km timed special will mainly take place on sandy terrain, sandwiched between a 400 km ingoing liaison section and another one outgoing 240 km long.
The special has more or less half the distance as usual announced (322km)
