Check out the new tutorial on how to create images for Zetta.IO using Packer from Hashicorp.
Packer is an open source tool for creating identical machine images for multiple platforms from a single source configuration. Packer is lightweight, runs on every major operating system, and is highly performant, creating machine images for multiple platforms in parallel.

Lots of quotes from me!

I've been thinking about the newest addition to the AWS family today, Glacier. Seems all details on the back-end is (as always) secret. Any theories?

My theory after 5 minutes of thinking:

Software similar to S3 in that objects are distributed across groups of 3-4 servers, but very different hardware. Cheap commodity SATA disks connected to very cheap motherboards with SATA extenders and wake on lan (no BMC) to wake nodes up. Stacks of disks bundled together extremly tight, without much airflow. Can probably even work without AC; Since data is hardly ever accessed, the drives can be turned off most of the time, and nodes can be suspended to disk. They would only be spun up one by one on certain intervals to check integrity of the objects.

Anyone else?

+Per Buer  I don't know where that suspend to disk idea came from, I agree with you on netboot. :-)

There would be some kind of proxy/staging area ofcourse, and all containers (i.e. databases of objects) would be on "always available" servers.

We should just build our own version of Glacier now that we know how.. ;-)

On another note, hopefully more backup vendors will support storing data to these kind of services soon. I know some open source solutions integrate with S3/Swift and I also think CommVault Simpana and Seagate i365 does.

Great way to spend Saturday night. Battery on an IBM ServeRAID 7k controller had grown to double size, literally breaking the board. Bad design.

Think you can call that one a hardware failure. :p

Check out the new tutorial on how to backup your Linux servers to Zetta.IO Object Storage using Duply and Duplicity.
Backing up your servers critical data is extremly critical in a cloud environment where cloud servers are considered ephermal. In this tutorial we will look at utilizing Object Storage in combination with open source projects to add encrypted, trusted and unlimited backup to your application ...

Veldig hyggelig familieopplevelse, absolutt verdt turen.
