It seems lately… many people want to get to know “Benzo” Better known as the “Costa Rican Carmela Soprano”. Lauren Benzo was born July 12 in Erie, PA. Lauren’s the youngest of two, to an African American mother and second daughter, to an Afro Latino father. Growing up, Benzo wanted to become a female MC. Along with her sister Monica “Modesty” Benzo, they formed a group called D.Y.M.E.ndz – Which stands for Driven Young Motivated Entrepreneurs. During her high school years, Benzo ran a recording studio. This was the beginning of Benzo knowing that she deeply loved the essence and the hard work that comes out of “Hip-Hop”.
After high school, Benzo told her mother and sister “If I don’t make it as a rapper… I’m going to make sure that my name rings bells in the industry. In a positive way!” She took the name D.Y.M.E.ndz and that D.Y.M.E. brand to develop a company. Now known as D.Y.M.E.ndz Inc. All of this came together when she was working on her Associates degree at Erie Business Center. During this time, she started promotions for herself and other companies that wanted to do side deals with her. She knew plenty of managers in the industry, so this made it easy for her to book acts, without going thru a booking agency. Benzo has progressed from promotions not only in her hometown. But also cities close by, such as Cleveland, OH, Pittsburgh, PA, Buffalo, NY, and even Canada. With concerts and walk-thru’s from Juelz Santana, to Maze feat Frankie Beverly, to accomplishing a sold out concert with Miley Cyrus.
Benzo was approached with a modeling contact in 2003. She moved to NYC to see if that was what she wanted to do. It didn’t last long. She insisted on furthering her education in something that she enjoyed. Benzo started attending Fashion Institute of Technology for Marketing & Advertising. She was far from home and working hard on receiving her Masters. Yet, she made sure that every chance she got to do something to put her D.Y.M.E. stamp on it. She did it. From side promotions to getting her feet wet in the public relations department. It soon paid off.
Ms. Benzo got her big break in the industry, thanks to the gift of networking. Her previous accomplishments caught the eye of “MoneyGreen”, which is a “right-hand man” to the “Evil Genius” Dj Green Lantern. Benzo has always been a fan of Green’s work in the mixtape circuit, plus knowing that he was a phenomenal producer. She soon met Green and rest of the members of Team Invasion, who she refers to as her big brothers. After Benzo “showed” and “proved” her ability to help promote their brand, along with leading and molding her own. It was only right to give her the title of “The First Lady of Team Invasion”.
As time progressed, Vanessa Saez of ThatsHipHop.com reached out to Benzo with the idea of radio. Vanessa seen the D.Y.M.E. brand developing in the beginning. She knew Benzo had the look and voice for the job. Plus, everyone knows that Benzo is a pure “Hip-Hop Head”. When thinking about the whole radio concept. She wanted to give “Indie” MC’s and lyricists that she refers to on her show “The UnderGround OverGround” an outlet. Not any outlet. But one that she didn’t have coming up as a young female MC, yet still having the D.Y.M.E. stamp on it. And now we have “D.Y.M.E. Life Radio”. Her show just reached 3 years/ 130+ shows strong. You can check it out every Wednesday evening 8-10 pm est. on ThatsHipHop.com and D.Y.M.E. Life Radio’s personal Ustream channel.
To add more notches to her belt, she does freelance journalism for many websites and magazines. She is a judge for many major battle leagues including GrindTimeNow. She is currently working on a hip hop based music video television show with her sister Monica “Modesty DYME” Benzo and childhood friend Sophia “Ms. Sunshine Juicy” Twillie. Benzo speaks on panels to give advice to people that are entering the industry with little or no knowledge and to receive knowledge herself. She also won a Nerve DJ’s “Female DJ of the Year” award.
D.Y.M.E. This is the brand and so much more to come. Benzo is on the highway to success and she’s speeding 90 miles per hour to the top! #NOWTHATSHIPHOP
