My new definition of success, thanks to Austin Hatch's late father, Stephen:

“When you are loved by family and friends, admired by your peers, using your talents constructively, and consistently contributing to improving civilization.”
If you have not yet heard of University of Michigan freshman basketball player, Austin Hatch (pictured above hugging Coach Beilien), now is the time to get to know him. Be sure to bring out your kleenex when you watch a clip of SC Featured – Miraculous: The Austin Hatch Story and/or read this recent ESPN article. Long story …

It's official ...

I'm (back) on the job market.

PUMPED
I’m (officially) back on the job market. If you are looking for a relentlessly curious, killer communicator, wickedly creative, super-passionate, (humble – ha!) guy to help take your company to the next level, look no further. I’m that guy. Actually, if you are serious about hiring me or know someone who may be, I’ve created …

From Podcast to Book, Day 15: Turning Words Into a Story

The hard part, but the part I find most enjoyable!
Day 15. I'm officially halfway through this project. Holy crap. Time is flying. Today's Accomplishment List Edited 2 chapters. Today's Top of Mind Thought In yesterday's update, I talked about editing being the most difficult part of the process. I lied. Kinda. The hardest part is figuring out how to turn

If you are going to write a book, be sure you LOVE to write.

Obvious, but worth repeating.

That's today's lesson learned in Day 10 of From Podcast to Book.
Day 10. Today's Accomplishment List Finished Chapter 5 draft (the one I was supposed to finish yesterday!). Finished Chapter 6 draft - I now have 5 of the 9 (over 55%) episodes transcribed into chapters. Boom. Emailed 40+ past podcast guests letting them know about this project and encouraging

8 days in and going strong.
Day 8. Today's Accomplishment List Finished first pass of Chapter 4 - that’s 3 guest chapters (draft) completed with 6 more to go. 33% “done.” Created a "daily goals" timeline in Google Docs - still a work-in-progress. Received 2 more audio-to-text transcripts from Speechpad and dropped them

Day 16. Another day ... more editing! Today's Accomplishment List Edited 2 (more) chapters. Today's Top of Mind Thought When you write your own book - and self-publish - there really are no rules. Chapters can be long or short. You can use slang. And you can start a sentence with

COACH DJ, the career transition coach http://coach-dj.com | @umich alum | Podcaster - http://socialbutterflyguy.com/podcasts | Lover of beer, coffee, and people.
Introduction

Yo! I’m DJ Waldow. Yes, that’s my real name. David Jason if you want to get technical … however, my parents named me “David Jason” so they could call me DJ. I’ve gone by DJ my whole life. It used to be D.J., then – for a very brief period – it was dj. For the past 15 years or so, I’m just DJ.

I guess now I’m also COACH DJ or just “COACH.” Some people call me “Dude.” Whatever works for you, works for me.

When I was 6, Van Halen released their Hot For Teacher video on MTV. The nerdy kid? Yeah. His name was Waldow. When I was 11, the first Where’s Waldo? book was released in the United States. However, I’m neither a nerdy kid with glasses in a Van Halen video nor am I hidden in a book (though I do own the “Where You At?” t-shirt).

I’m also not a Disc Jockey. I know very little about music, other than Dr. Dre and Snoop. Ha!

I live in Redwood City, California with my super-smart wife (Kristina) and two amazing children (Eva, 4.5 years old; and Cal, 2.5 years old). We have a dog and two cats. No fish. No hamsters. Though we did have a raccoon in our house recently … at 2:30 in the morning. Fun!

My life path has allowed me to see the Michigan Wolverines win the National Championship during my senior year of college; live in Chicago while working as a consultant; spend almost a year in Kansas City trying to get a startup off the ground (2000 was not the best year to be a dotcom); substitute teach while working for a non-profit in Clearwater Beach, FL; teach 8th grade American History for 2 years in Rochester, NY after earning my Masters in Education; advise clients on email marketing best practices at Bronto Software in Durham, NC; get my Masters of Business at Kenan-Flagler Business School in Chapel Hill, NC; live, sleep, eat, and breath email marketing and social media as the Director of Community at Blue Sky Factory; AND start & effectively run my own email marketing consultancy (Waldow Social). I had a brief stint as the Digital Marketing Evangelist at Marketo, a San Mateo, CA based marketing automation software provider. I’ve loved (nearly) every minute of it. Every day continues to get better.

Nearly 10 of my 16 post-college years have involved email marketing. I wrote a book about email marketing. I traveled the country speaking about email marketing (as well as a few other topics, like DUDE). I worked at several email marketing companies.

However, in June of 2014, I left the world of (email) marketing when I quit my job at Marketo.

The day I quit – as well as several months after, I really was not sure what the heck I was going to do next.

One thing I knew for sure: I had lost my passion for email marketing – the industry I lived and breathed for nearly a decade. I made it my personal mission to rediscover my passion.

When I published the “why I quit” post, I was inundated with people reaching out to me. Text messages, instant messages, phone calls, tweets, private Facebook messages, and so on. Everyone wanted to talk.

20% of those I chatted with over the next months wanted to tell me they had been where I was before … and then they found their passion. It was this group of people who lead me to launch Living Your Passion, the two-times a week podcast where I chat with folks who have found, and are living, their passion.

The other 80%?

Yeah. That group. The people who did not love what they were doing … those who had lost their passion (or had never found it) … those who wanted to quit their (shitty) jobs but had not – for a variety of reasons. Some stayed where they were because of fear; others remained in their crappy jobs due to financial issues; still others didn’t have a good answer for why they were leaving.

Then I received an email from a colleague of mine – a person I had known for years. She was working in a job that she did not love and was looking for some advice, some guidance, some coaching, around how to quit and find her next career. She had read my “Why I Quit” post and wanted to be able to write something similar.

We met in person. I had no real agenda other than talking, helping, advising, coaching.

We had a great conversation. Really really great.

On the train ride home that night, I purchased the domain QuitYourShittyJob.com. The very next week, I started working with this woman – who has since turned from colleague to client to friend – on a pro-bono basis. Over the next few weeks, I added several other clients to mix – all of whom needed help transitioning their career. I’m happy to report all three are interviewing now and will soon be moving into a job they love.

Along the way, I also had the great fortune of meeting with Steve Woodruff, the Clarity Therapist. In a few short, but intensive, hours via Skype, Steve unpacked my professional DNA and helped me gain clarity (get it?) around what was next.

Steve told me my DNA was made up of “4 Es”:

  1. Energizer: If you’ve ever met me – in person, online, whatever – you know I have a near-endless supply of energy. I tend to pass along that uber-energy to others. I feed off energy.
  2. Evangelizer: If I believe in something (see email marketing above), I go all in. I’ll shout it from the rooftops. I’ll tell everyone who is within earshot (even if they are not listening).
  3. Epiphanizer: Yeah. I realize that’s not a word, but it is part of my DNA! I used to teach 8th grade (true story!) and nothing got me more jazzed than when the “light bulb” went on for a student. I loved that. Translate that today to when an audience member connects with something I’ve mentioned in a live talk or a podcast listener is inspired by a guest or a COACH DJ client uncovers their passion. I LOVE IT.
  4. Ego-Expert: I am a borderline narcissist. There. I said it. I’m confident in my abilities. I know I can help YOU. Some people call that ego. I call it confidence!

As you can see, Steve nailed it. And just like that …

COACH DJ, the career transition coach, was officially born.

###

While my life and career path has been a winding – and exciting – path, one common thread has existed: My love – and passion – for people.

I love meeting new people, connecting with people, growing relationships with people, learning from people, helping people. People. People. People. I also love coffee and beer.

If interested, a bit more about me (DJ), the person:

I’ve had quite a “unique” 38+ years on this planet we refer to as Earth. By the numbers:

1: Number of wives I’ve had. Rare in my family. Kristina is her name, OB/GYN is her game. She’s way smarter than me and way better looking. I call her The K-Dawg.

2: Number of podcasts I currently host/co-host. Learn more here.

3: Number of homes we’ve owned. One in Durham, NC. One in Salt Lake City, UT. And our current home in Emerald Hills, CA. As you can imagine, the prices of our homes have increased as we’ve moved cities/states … and the size of our homes have decreased. Ha!

4: The number of jobs I’ve had since 2009. Bronto. Blue Sky Factory. Waldow Social. Marketo. And now … COACH DJ(where you are right now).

5: The number of my favorite baseball player when I was growing up. Any guesses who? Tweet (or email) me your guess!

6: Total number of letters in our children’s names: Eva (born, March 2010) and Cal (born, June 2013).

7: Most consecutive episodes of Breaking Bad Kristina and I watched during our binge in the Winter of 2014.

8: Number of states I’ve lived in since 1998 (the year I graduated high school). NY, MI, IL, MO, FL, (NY again), NC, UT, CA.

Found this place (and Mike) via Yelp, of course. Thought I had fried my MacBook Air recently (coffee spill!). The Apple Store told me it was going to be $750 to open up my machine and see what the damage was. Mike diagnosed the issue - FOR FREE - then determined all it needed was a new keyboard. He installed the keyboard and had it back to me in a matter of days. $185. Hard to beat, right? HIGHLY RECOMMEND Mike and SJ Mac Repair.
