The world of Ingress is decaying
or even better dear +John Hanke
I write you this open letter because I’m worried. And I am afraid that, which might show from the the +1’s, comments and re-shares of this post, I am not alone.
First of all I want to start of congratulating you and the whole Niantic staff on the overwhelming success of Pokémon GO. This game has in no time succeeded in what many parents, sports clubs and governments have not been able to do for years; dragging youngsters away from their game consoles and bringing them outside. Outside to play, to move, to socialise with others and also to explore; explore the beauty of all things outside of the walls of their homes.
But the counter side of this success comes with my fear. Unfortunately with the great success comes the downside and we see the effects of large groups of people playing outside. There is the trashing of public places, loudness during evening hours, trespassing and I could name many more.
Because of these negative sides of the success the public is wondering; what are all these people doing here and why exactly here. So these people learn about the Pokémon GO game and realise that their favourite spots have turned into magnets to players collecting items.
That is where the trouble starts, these people start appealing and those appeals, I am afraid, results in the removal of PokeStops. These Stops are, as everyone knows by now, portals from your other successful game Ingress. As far as I can see now the removal of a PokeStop also results in the removal of an Ingress portal. A portal which has most likely been there for years, causing no or hardly any trouble.
So here is what I would like you to explain to me and with that to the whole Ingress community. Is it true that the removal of a PokeStop results in the removal of an Ingress portal? And if so; Is it really necessary to remove Ingress portals as a result of the success of Pokémon GO, thereby punishing a large group of mostly social and well behaving Ingress players throughout the world?
The world around us is not what it seems. Our future is at stake and you must choose a side. The world around us is not what it seems, but it seems to be decaying rapidly.
I sincerely hope that you will read this public letter and make an end to my fear and that of many fellow Ingress players.
Kind regards, Joris Arts+NIA Ops
