Soviet occupation of East Berlin ended in 1990, and today the DDR Museum offers a snapshot of life in the old days. The interactive museum allows visitors a truly hands on experience for both children and adults alike: root through drawers of East German memorabilia, mimic a Stasi officer and listen in on a bugged flat. Out on the streets you can take a unique tour of the city by renting a Trabant, the classic car produced in former East Germany, now painted in bright colours by the Trabi Safari company.

Loved it. You want to enjoy a piece of history? Be it displays, video and audio clips, our exhibits. It's touristy, so expect lots of visitors.

Very crowded and didn't portray life in the DDR as a bad experience. I'm sure there were some bright sparks in their days as they had to make the best of a bad situation. However, life under communist Soviet rule was a disparaging experience. Not great.

Dear Romy Zaidel, thanks for your feedback. The exhibition of the DDR Museum was put together by well-known historians, who care deeply about a historically correct representation of the life in the DDR. There are a few other people who think of the exhibition as you do, but there are as many that think not only differently, but in the opposite way. Those two sides are still in balance. We try showning the DDR from many different sides not just positive or negative. That is also why that many people would like to see the exhibition. This can cause issues, that we are trying to solve by enlarging the exhibition. Until then I can warmly recommend visiting the museum in the afternoon or evening. The DDR Museum opens daily until 8 pm, saturdays until 10 pm. /mg

The museum is not particularly sizable, but it makes perfect use of what it does have. There are a number of activities, and It does an excellent job of recreating the feel of the DDR at the social and economic level.

Interesting look into the everyday life of the DDR. Not having lived thru it myself, I can only surmise what it must've been like based on history books and TV shows. Those historical documents only tell part of the story--this museum seems to attempt to fill in some of the gaps to show what the average person's life would have been like, good and bad. Really, it helps to humanize the DDR without editorializing too much. I enjoyed my visit for sure.

This museum gives a great insight into life during the DDR in a very accessible way - it's quite interactive. It would be great for families, and for those looking a quick over view. It was very busy when we were there and it's a pretty small museum, so that did take away from it a bit. It's probably worth trying to suss out when the most quiet time of the day is for admission. We also done the Topography of Terror and the Stasi Museum which are both more in depth but a bit more intense. This is the perfect starting point.

Too fun experience to be genuine. Simply different that what I remember from people who lived during DDR were telling us. Wonder who isn't truthful here Hm.

Great way to get an impression of life in the GDR. Lots of information and items from every day life, but also a couple of large exhibits, like a Trabant car with a built in driving simulator and former government car. One caveat: on busy days (like the day when I was there) it's rather cramped and since lots of information is hidden behind little doors and in drawers (which can't all be opened when it's busy), you miss a lot. So pick a quiet day.
