The only tattoo I've ever seriously considered
Today I went to a tattoo artist, and for $60 I let a man with a giant Jesus-tattoo on his head ink a semi-colon onto my wrist where it will stay until the day I die. By now, enough people have star...

Yes. This. Absolutely.

I've argued against gratuitous violence in writing (novels, TV, movies...) for years.

Keep searching.
Do not go upon what has been acquired by repeated hearing; nor tradition; nor rumor; nor what is in a scripture; nor surmise; nor axiom; nor specious reasoning; nor bias towards one's beliefs; nor upon another's seeming ability; nor upon the consideration, 'The monk is our teacher.

Things I learned working the polls at yesterday’s special election, where our precinct’s turnout was barely 5%:

- Humans can catch leprosy from armadillos.
- More than 75% of 18-34-year-olds who take the military basic entrance exam do not pass the test.
- Far too many people don’t accurately read information on a public website.
- To pass the first level test for a ham radio operator’s license, you have to send/receive Morse code at 3 words per minute.
- There are scientific research programs that focus specifically on vocal cords.
- Our government stipend for the 15+ hour election day breaks down to $6.66 (gasp!) per hour. No wonder they call us “volunteers.”

Morse Code is no longer a requirement for any level of Amateur Radio licensing in the US (http://www.arrl.org/getting-licensed).  With that said, the mode has enjoyed a significant increase in popularity in recent years.  Thanks for volunteering your time.

Mantra of my life: "[I'm] never enough."
Life is a bitch. Then you die. So while staring at my navel the other day, I decided that that bitch happens in four stages. Here they are.

I'm a bit hesitant to put my books to the test!

Marshal McLuhan, a communication theorist, has decided that if you turn to page 69 in a book and like it, you’ll like the entire book.

Does your book pass the Page 69 Test?
Long a leader in the Southeastern Pennsylvania writing scene, writing teacher and developmental editor Kathryn Craft is the author of The Art of Falling. She applied the Page 69 Test to her second novel, The Far End of Happy,...

“As men have often forsaken the plow and the anvil at the summons of war, let women now leave all that may be left of home for a great and earnest day of counsel…In the name of womanhood and humanity, I earnestly ask that a general congress of women, without limit of nationality, may be appointed and held at some place deemed most convenient.”

Better than a Hallmark holiday any day (and buy Mom flowers on some day besides an arbitrary calendar date - she'll appreciate it more!)
The now Hallmark holiday wasn't supposed to be about frilly cards and flowers

And this how a classy author responds to uninformed, racist "fan" mail.
I knew it would happen eventually, I would get my first “fan” mail. I perhaps was misguided and thought that the first experience would be more positive. And I know the common wisdom to not engage the internet trolls, but thi...
