There’s a lesson here. If a big, powerful company wants something from the government, they’ll do whatever it takes to get it, including threatening to go somewhere else. If a company desperately wants to go somewhere else, which was the case with the Whalers, nothing’s going to stop them.

A poorly run DMV or a disruption in service can color the public’s perception of government in general and feed the cynicism of those who think the public sector can’t do anything right.

Officials in the Malloy administration should have been alert to that mindset when they decided to shut the DMV down for an entire week this month in order to upgrade the department’s technology.

American universities are enriching administrators at the expense of teachers. Adjuncts, Frederickson explains, have been gradually displacing tenured faculty. “In 1969,” she writes, “almost 80 percent of college faculty members were tenured or tenure track. Today, the numbers have essentially flipped, with two-thirds of faculty now non-tenure and half of those working only part-time, often with several different teaching jobs.” Meanwhile, “universities increased the number of administrator positions by 60 percent between 1993 and 2009, ten times the rate at which they added tenured positions.”
Colleges’ mistreatment of part-time professors shortchanges students too.

The State Elections Enforcement Commission says the pro-Malloy mailings should have been subject to the state’s stringent campaign finance laws, but the Democrats disagree.

At its heart this is about accountability, and it is about transparency. And it shows just how far the Democrats are willing to go to undermine the state’s so-called “clean election laws.”

Such is the state of the news cycle today: Someone famous is interviewed, a portion of that interview is highlighted in news stories, aggregator websites use tantalizing headlines to promote the most alluring quote from that portion of the interview, people share sensationalized pronouncements of that one quote on social media, and the whole thing goes viral.
