Unilateral #retinitis pigmentosa. Medical case

1. Introduction
Retinitis pigmentosa is a group of #genetic degenerative inherited disorders of the #retina, characterized by progressive #photoreceptors damage. Progressive retinal #degeneration almost in all cases is revealed in bilateral form and very seldom diseases one #eye.
Defining unilateral retinitis pigmentosa, one should consider the following criteria: exclusion of #infectious etiology of the disease (syphilis, rubella, virus retinitis, onchocerciasis), presence of classic symptoms on the diseased eye, and absence of them on the other one (Krill and Iser 1959). For #correct diagnosis of retinitis pigmentosa one should pay much attention to #electroretinogram and #electrooculogram testing (Spadea et al. 1998). Underrepresentation of the disease forces researchers to consider if the pathology is a separate disease or it is just an aborted form of progressive retinal #degeneration (Joseph 1951). In literature, there are description of the case histories of the disease, but frequency of such cases is very low (Carr and Siegel 1973; Kolb and Galloway 1964). According to data of Joseph (1951) from 1865 to 1949 there were described only 45 cases, Kolb and Galloway (1964) in 1965 mentioned 3 cases, Spadea et al. (1998) in 1998 marked 4 cases.

There's a 'switch' in our brains that wakes us up

The researchers discovered an ion channel – which they named 'Sandman' – that is kept inside the sleep-control neurons when they are electrically active. Ion channels control the electrical impulses through which brain cells communicate. When dopamine is present, it causes Sandman to move to the outside of the cell, short-circuiting the neurons and shutting them off – leading the fly to wake up. "If – and these are big ifs at the moment – these cells also use the Sandman mechanism to switch between active and silent states, and if Sandman could be blocked selectively in these cells, we would have a powerful new principle of a hypnotic drug," Prof Miesenböck told WIRED.

Landmark Studies Find that Active Ingredient in Magic Mushrooms May Ease Severe Anxiety and Depression
Antidepressants may not help the approximately 40 percent of people with cancer who suffer from a mood disorder. Now, two research teams–one from Johns Hopkins University and the other from New York University (NYU) Langone Medical Center–have published randomized, blinded studies published in The Journal of Psychopharmacology, the results of which show that a single dose of psilocybin, the active ingredient in magic mushrooms, can provide relief from the anxiety and depression in patients being treated for cancer.

The researchers provided treatment to participants who had life-threatening cancers as well as a psychiatric diagnosis of anxiety or depression. In the Johns Hopkins study, after six months, 78 percent of the participants were less depressed than they started, as rated by a clinician, and 83 percent were less anxious. The New York University study was very similar, with 60 to 80 percent of the participants seeing improvements in various measures of depression and anxiety after six months.

Algorithms of medical tactics in providing #orthopedic care to patients with congenital clefts of upper #lip and #palate in adulthood

1. Introduction
Congenital #malformations of maxillofacial area in Ukraine makes up 30-45% of the total number of defects (Prykhodko 2007; Shakirova, Pogudina 2011), out of 800-1000 children one child is born with cleft upper lip, palate or a combination of these two #defects, and for last 50 years the birth of #children with #cleft upper lip and palate has increased twice (Ivanov et al. 2008). The primary method of treatment remains the early #surgical closure of congenital cleft of upper lip as well as the palate. However, these early #operations can not affect the further development of the upper jaw, which can lead to the development or strengthening #maxillodental #deformations at the absence of appropriate skilled care (Makyeyev et al. 2011).

What is AFib or AF?
Atrial fibrillation is a type of arrhythmia in which the upper chambers of the heart (the atria) beat erratically. This erratic beating can be extremely fast, reaching more than 300 beats per minute, which prevents blood from circulating freely from the atria into the lower chambers of the heart, known as the ventricles. Atrial fibrillation can be a one-time event, a recurring issue or a permanent condition.

Atrial fibrillation (also called AFib or AF) is a quivering or irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia) that can lead to blood clots, stroke, heart failure and other heart-related complications.

What happens during AFib?
Normally, your heart contracts and relaxes to a regular beat. In atrial fibrillation, the upper chambers of the heart (the atria) beat irregularly (quiver) instead of beating effectively to move blood into the ventricles.

If a clot breaks off, enters the bloodstream and lodges in an artery leading to the brain, a stroke results. About 15–20 percent of people who have strokes have this heart arrhythmia. This clot risk is why patients with this condition are put on blood thinners.
Even though untreated atrial fibrillation doubles the risk of heart-related deaths and is associated with a 5-fold increased risk for stroke, many patients are unaware that AFib is a serious condition.
