The Magic of Science: Water and Card Trick

Check out this cool experiment Mr. Patrick did with the kids today. If you cover a glass of water with a playing card, or a laminated paper, and flip it over the water "magically" stays inside the glass. The kids were amazed. We haven't told them exactly why this happens. We're going to let it simmer a bit and do some more discussion and experimentation. However, they were impressed. As Teague put it, "No way!" But be careful if you try this at home. The child will want to touch the card and somebody is going to end up wet! (We learned that one the hard way. Whoops!) http://ow.ly/i/gj4T0 http://ow.ly/i/gj4Yz http://ow.ly/i/gj54u

Today I showed one child how you could build a basic catapult out of tongue depressors, a rubber band, and a wooden block. Before you know it, we had lots of catapults and the kids experimented with sugar cube placement and hand pressure to shoot sugar cubes into the air.

Out of the mouth of babes

Today the kids were reading the book Curious George with Mr. Patrick. He discussed with the children what the word curious means.

The first suggestion he got is that curious means you get in trouble. Patrick explained that just because you are curious does not mean you get in trouble. However, considering everything that Curious George gets into it wasn't a bad guess.

Mr. Patrick provided the example that he is curious what would happen if we brought the snow inside to the classroom. There was a chorus of, "It would melt"

Then Cooper said he is curious about chicken eagles and Parker said he is curious about slapping words. I am now curious about how they come us with these questions!

Let it snow!

No, I don't mean the song from Frozen, I'm talking about snow days. Creekside Kids will be open even if Cheyenne Mountain School District cancels school for the day. If you need us, give us a call at (719) 635-9111 to schedule your child or extend his/her day. Don't forget that if the district closes we will have a 30 minute delayed start and will open at 7:30.

Don't forget your snow boots and mittens! We love to play in the snow and it's just not any fun with cold fingers and toes.

A notice will be posted on the center's Facebook page and voicemail message if we have a delayed start and for the rare occasion that we are closed due to the weather.

Hover Craft

Creating a hover craft is really simple and lots of fun. All you need is a CD, a water bottle top, and a hot glue gun. Glue the lid to the CD. Blow up a balloon with air and attach to the opening of the water bottle lid. Let go!

The air rushes out of the balloon and is distributed underneath the CD. This creates a slight lift and you have a temporary hover craft.

Besides making hover crafts, balloons are just fun to blow up and let go. Talk about hours of fun.

Yesterday we painted some popcorn to make decorations for our tree. Oh what messy fun. The kids got to share paint pallets and mix up their own colors. And can you believe it?! The popcorn actually got painted and not eaten. Well...all except a piece per child. I mean, after all, you can't have popcorn around and not eat a piece. Right?

Our Christmas Tree is now green. We will continue the project through home made decorations, paper chains, and popcorn string. I wonder how much popcorn will make it to the tree?
