There may be a good opportunity to raise the option of introducing a transparent and respectful process for acknowledging the contribution of volunteers, including the provision of a sitting fee for loss of income and travel costs.

There is a very good example where people who volunteer their time 'and' where they are not being paid from other sources, can be eligible to receive a financial contribution for their time and travel costs incurred. As a useful practical example of where this is working well, can I suggest you the SA Department for Health and Ageing (SA Health) "Sitting Fees and Reimbursement for External Individuals". Refer http://www.sahealth.sa.gov.au/wps/wcm/connect/public+content/sa+health+internet/resources/policies/directive+sitting+fees+and+reimbursement+for+external+individuals+policy+directive
