Andreas, I'm afraid I'm a tourist too so cannot make any particular recommendations. My only suggestions are to book well in advance (cheap hotel rooms get snapped up), else give Airbnb (or equivalent) a try if you enjoy / don't mind the more personal service.´╗┐

Situated in probably the best location in town overlooking the beach from the north side, the hotel and town offer a tranquil stop on the southern edge of Orange County. One of our favourite stops, this was a great hotel where you can fall asleep to the sound of waves breaking on the rocks / beach below. No restaurant but basic room service menu else plenty of places in town to eat or whole foods for a picnic.

The hotel is located on the inland side of the road that runs along the edge of the beach. It is right next to the pier which sits at the end of Chase Street (the main High St), a 5 min walk under the freeway from the main shopping area. We enjoyed a room overlooking the pool and ocean with a balcony, large bed and sitting area - very generous size. The room contains all the facilities you expect and is well maintained and serviced by the hard working hotel staff. On-site parking is available for USD 15 per night.

Located at the top of Pacific Heights, this hotel nestles amongst the mansions sharing views of the city and the Bay. Stay here if you like boutique atmosphere and service - nothing is too much trouble for the friendly and helpful hotel staff. There is a daily shuttle service into some of the tourist hotspots, but equally most of the city is accessible on foot if you wish, starting with the local shops, cafes and bars of Fillmore Street.
