Love it. Are you buying all of the gear locally or do you need to order it in to Perth over the net?

A bit of both. You can get some stuff locally, like the Freetronics gear is available at Jaycar. I tend to mostly order online though.

Caffeine Withdrawal and the Zombie Apocalypse

I have been pretty sick for the last few days, but something was different about it this time. I was sinking into the clutches of the virus late last week but it really got its claws into me on Friday afternoon. Saturday I was on the hard stuff, plenty of codeine, but by Sunday to my surprise I hadn't improved.

Usually I get over a virus in a few days. In fact the headaches got worse, much worse. I had a headache like you wouldn't believe. I was actually screaming into my pillow. It sucked, and the drugs were not helping where usually they would. It just didn't feel right, like this was more than just a virus.

Then mid-Sunday I had an epiphany. A moment of clarity in the haze that had become my reality.

Coffee.

When was the last time I had consumed coffee. It must have been Friday morning. Over 48 hours. I stumbled into the kitchen with the worst, longest running, totally debilitating headache I had ever experienced and quickly jacked 2 shots of Nespresso into my system, then dived back into bed.

10 minutes later I felt better. 10 minutes after that the headache was almost gone! 10 minutes after that I was up and felt like all I had was a mild cold and a bit of nausea. No more headache.

So its true. I am physically addicted to caffeine. If I dont have it I will get very sick very fast. What to do, what to do... some would say, time to get off the juice. Ween yourself off it slowly. If you google for "caffeine withdrawal" and "headache" it paints a pretty scary picture. There's no going back.

What am I going to do? Well what I did was download an app for my iPhone that helps me track the amount of caffeine in my system. It's not a "quitting coffee app". Its an app that helps you maintain the optimal level of caffeine in your system. It reminds you when you are about to leave the optimal range so you can get more caffeine in.

I am never going back to that headache. It was that bad. I wish we lived in a world where I didn't need coffee to get through a day. How did I ever get to this point? Why wasn't I warned? And obviously its not just me. I dont know anybody who doesn't drink coffee regularly. I am surrounded by addicts (like myself) who don't realise it because they have never not been able to get their fix on a regular basis.

I can only hope that one day the world does not encounter a coffee shortage, where supply is intermittent and the prices go through the roof.  Because that my friends has the words "zombie apocalypse" written all over it.

Hmmm, perhaps I need to start stocking up now....

So many memories. So many hours lost. So much fun.

Goodbye, productivity.

Wolfenstein 3D is being released as a free in-browser game by Bethesda Software to mark the 20th anniversary of the game’s release.

Wolfenstein 3D is considered one of the earliest first-person shooters, and the game that made the genre popular on PC.

Pretty cool Greg. I always wanted to play around with Arduino, specifically I want to create a largish LCD display that reports live my current network bandwidth usage. Does that sound like it would be hard?

Well done on the dress. Father of the year :)

Shouldn't be too difficult. There's good library support for LCDs and you'll just need to get the bandwith usage to the board somehow, maybe through an ethernet connection.

When Chomsky Wept

Quite a powerful piece. I encourage you to make the time to read it and then find out more about Noam and his message.

"I have learned that our lives are largely driven by the unconscious defenses we develop early on against emotional pain. And it became clear to me that a key to understanding Noam is that, for whatever reason, he has fewer defenses than the rest of us against the pain of the world. He has no “skin.” He is forever tormented, as I was in Laos, by the suffering of the “unpeople” — and works around the clock to try and reduce it."

Unbelievable... very very sad.

So North Carolina is passing laws against same-sex marriage "because the bible says so". When can we expect them to pass capital punishment laws for adultery? And for working on Sundays? And for cursing at your parents? If they're going to read the book literally, I think we get to ask for some consistency.

Karl Rove made "the sanctity of marriage" a huge political issue in 2000, and I have a feeling they're going to try to do the same again in this election year. How many times has he been married again? And how many times has he been divorced? I forget. Sanctity of marriage indeed.
