3 lessons you shouldn’t learn from Taylor Swift, Thom Yorke, & Beyoncé

I totally agree with him on this one. Something I've been telling fellow musicians and client for a long time (in fact I should have written this post). :)

excerpt: "Here are the three lessons you should NOT learn from the examples of famous artists:

1. If you launch your album exclusively through one platform, your fans will be happy to follow you there. [They might not be.]

2. Releasing a secret album is guaranteed to get people talking. [It isn’t.]

3. You should pull your music from Spotify if you want to make the most money. [You shouldn’t.]"

Thinking about releasing songs as singles?

How to release a single

Here's a ebook I whipped up awhile back that outlines how I released singles over the course of a year. Here is some of what I cover:

- Why releasing and selling your songs by the singles is the best option for indie musicians

- How to prepare your files for distribution

-Which services to use to distribute your single on iTunes, Spotify, etc

- Where to promote your single, and more.

Henry Rollins puts things in perspective.

Henry Rollins on the Art and Business of DIY Media

You just don't get more indie than Henry Rollins. And if you think it is hard to make it in music today, just think about what it was like to promote a punk band pre-internet (no bandcamp, no iTunes, CDBaby, etc, etc).

I vividly remember the first time I heard Black Flag. It was in a kid named Mike Goodman’s bedroom, and the record was called Damaged. That’s how it was pre-Internet in suburban Houston. If it wasn’t on the radio or MTV, it was invisible — unless some cool kid turned you on to something newRead More...

Small revision for those looking for people to appreciate their abilities... stop for a little bit to book a show and do some marketing.

+R.M. Fees The key thing to remember is that the format shift has existed since the days of patronage hundreds of years ago. It's nothing new. What's new is how fast things are shifting. However, we've known since the days of Napster (the late 90s) that CDs would become more or less obsolete (I say more or less, because CD Baby certainly still sells them, and you usually need them as an artist to send to radio stations, reviewers, etc.). It's only expected that something would come to replace it, though I can certainly agree that we haven't really settled on any one thing. We have digital downloads, streaming, vinyl, and 2 out of those 3 things are growing. The product you end with is not the vision you start with. Music is recorded onto computers or digital 8-tracks, or whatever. You can always cross the bridge of the format question when you come to it.

FAQ ON HOW TO BECOME AN IDEA MACHINE

Love, love, love this idea. This is a great post. I already have one list in the bag. I thought about it for awhile and ended up doing a list of the idea themes I could do a list of. :)

One of the ideas, to appease my inner songwriter, 10 ideas for songs to write.

What will your first list be about?

I was out of ideas when I googled “how to kill myself”. I was sure that three things were going to happen: I'd go broke (and then my 3 year old would starve to death), nobody would kiss me ever again, and I would die because of course self worth = net worth (duh!).

Apple still exists because they made an MP3 player when no other company would have because such added exposure to sharing music online.

A Google Play music subscription is something like $10 a month.
