Our Connect reading list is always expanding, especially when it comes to books that can help sharpen our leadership skills. Here are a few of our favorite management books, which we read and re-read to accelerate our development.

“Switch: How to Change Things When Change Is Hard,” by Chip and Dan Heath, has earned high status throughout the Connect office.

We’re committed to delivering memorable speeches when we go onstage to represent Connect in front of an audience. As we improve our presenting prowess, we’re using the following proven strategies to make lasting impressions on our listeners.

Visual aids are helpful in leaving a mark on an audience, but we don’t want to take too much attention away from what we’re saying. We keep it simple when it comes to visuals, preferring to use PowerPoint or even a whiteboard to illustrate our main points.

We recognize how much of an advantage it is to have a helpful mentor here at Connect HQ. Through our experiences helping others, we’ve found that acting as a mentor provides remarkable benefits as well. Here are a few ways we advance our own educations as we help others grow:

• Understanding Our Own Goals: The more we assist others in reaching their professional objectives, the more clarity we gain with regard to our own goals.

Of the travel incentives that can be earned at Connect HQ, retreats to sunny destinations tend to be the most coveted. We’re currently deciding who will attend just such an event in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. There are many personal and professional benefits to be gained from this exciting retreat.

Hand-selected members of Team Connect will enjoy plenty of fun in the sun during the event, but that’s really just the beginning of the positive outcomes.

When we bring college students and new graduates into our Connect internship program, we have a formula that helps them get on the path to fulfilling their potential. Here are a few of the strategies we use to give our interns the best and most valuable experience we can.

After an immersive first few days of training, we do our best to treat our interns like full-time members of Team Connect. That’s what they are, after all, even if they stay with us just for the duration of the program.

We continue to surpass our Connect growth goals, which means we’re looking for the right talent to build our team. Of the many traits we look for in an ideal candidate, an athletic mind-set is one of the most important due to the many benefits it offers.

Rachel O’Hara, our CEO, stated, “Persistence is something the greatest athletes share. It’s also an attribute that comes in handy when chasing long-term professional goals.

Skills aren’t the only things that draw attention to associates. Managers look for other key behaviors when they consider who is ready for the next level. Here are some practices we’ve observed in our Connect office that get positive notice:

• Stay Organized: It’s true some people thrive when their desks are mounds of papers and clutter. However, it does send a message to others that these individuals are not necessarily prepared for leadership.

Many of our Connect discussions center on traits possessed by great leaders. We observe and learn from the practices the most effective managers put in place to rally their troops. Here are three we strive to incorporate:

• Model Behaviors: Any great manager recognizes that the best way in which to train people on how they are to act is to do, not tell.
