There isn't just one route for rolling out a #responsive redesign, but that's not a bad thing - bespoke is best
Many responsive approaches work, but you really need to understand the benefits and risks of each before proceeding with a redesign.

In the last 10 years, the global Internet population has grown from 1 billion to 3.2 billion. The number of people owning a mobile phone worldwide has now trumped the number of people with electricity, clean water or sanitation. Yet, the impact of such large scale connectivity isn't always positive, according to a new World Bank report.
In the last 10 years, the Internet population has grown from 1 billion to 3.2 billion. The big question is: can connectivity close the digital divide?

Earlier this month, #Microsoft officially withdrew technical support for #IE 8, 9 and 10 - meaning that users will no longer receive updates or essential #security patches. Many users have been left confused by the announcement - assuming that Microsoft would simply 'switch off' older versions of the browser.

Is this the case? Or is there still life left in IE?

In an open letter published last Friday, developers of some of the web’s largest #code libraries and languages complained that #GitHub isn’t listening to them.

The letter, entitled 'Dear GitHub', expresses the community's frustration with the platform's non-committal approach.

Do you agree with the #developer community? Could GitHub be doing more to encourage a reciprocal relationship?

If there's one thing we know by now, it's that web #development can be a protracted process at times; you have got to stringently test your #CSS, #HTML, #JavaScript and other pieces of code against almost every browser imaginable before prepping for launch. Whilst this process may take time, it is fundamental for continued success.

When building websites, front end developers spend countless hours ensuring sites display gracefully on older browsers, but what about those in emerging markets, where every bit and byte counts?

In case you needed further proof that #mobile is fast becoming the priority channel in the contemporary #digital mix, a study carried out by Yahoo's Flurry network has identified that there are now more mobile devices than people in the UK.

It is clear from the #data set that going forward, effective campaigns must prioritise both content AND delivery. By demanding seamless interactive experiences wherever they are, mobile users have pushed those behind the scenes to deliver higher quality content than ever before. This content should be able to reach the right person, at the right time, on absolutely any device.

Web browsing is about to get considerably safer, with #Google issuing a new set of #HTTPS guidelines to developers, informing them that it will soon be letting users know when they are visiting non-secure web pages.

The guidelines outline how to bolster site #privacy, making it harder for third parties to monitor private user activity.

In the coming weeks, keep an eye out for a small green lock icon in your address bar when browsing with #Chrome to know when your connection is encrypted.

Researchers from Princeton University have revealed that the Internet of Things (IoT) is considerably less secure than we have come to expect.

During a talk at this year's PrivacyCon, hosted by the Federal Trade Commission (FCC), researchers revealed that many of the smart devices powering the IoT are leaking private information in cleartext - with little-to-no effort to encrypt our personal data.

The government has been urged to extend the Government Digital Service's remit to support local councils by the Vice Chairman of LocalGov, Phil Rumens.

Rumens suggests: “It just needs a few people to join things up between local councils and central and local government, and then everyone else will be looking to improve the digital services the public sector offers.

Should the government extend the GDS' remit to include support for local councils? Would the move encourage wider digital adoption?

When building websites, front end developers often spend countless hours ensuring sites work gracefully on older browsers, but what about those in developing nations?

It is down to developers to ensure that sites gracefully degrade for users, no matter how difficult the task may be. Every user should be able to experience the Internet as it should be experienced – what they shouldn’t be presented with is a half-baked version of the web we’ve come to know.
