Urgent!

We've been receiving an increasing number of inquiries from the public who are being targeted by telephone scammers. People who are fraudulently claiming to be affiliated with Microsoft are telling potential victims that serious errors were detected on their computer and that immediate maintenance is required.

If the owner grants the caller access to their computer, the scammer remotes connects in and encrypts the hard drive. This renders the computer useless and cuts off access to all of the owner's programs and data. The "technician" then tells you that in order to correct the problem (that they created), you must pay a service fee (ransom). Even if you pay the ransom, there is no guarantee that the computer will be unencrypted and made operational again. And, the scammers will have your credit or debit card number.

If you receive an unexpected call from anyone claiming to be affiliated with Microsoft, or who wants to perform remote maintenance on your computer, just hang up on them. Otherwise, you run the risk of losing all access to your computer and becoming a victim of identity theft. There is little to no chance that these con artists can be caught, since many of them are operating out of other countries.

These criminals damage the reputation of the technical support industry as a whole. Computer Guy of Florida is an ethical and honest business and we work hard to be worthy of your trust. If you know of someone who has fallen victim to this crime, please call us and we will do everything possible to get your computer functioning again.

"Many people working in the technology industry today got their start on a machine made by Commodore International — a Vic-20, a Commodore 64 or, if they were lucky enough, an Amiga.

A new documentary movie, to be released on Netflix and Amazon Prime Video next month, plans to tell the little-known tale about one of the early big successes in the computer industry."

It's always wise to leave Wifi and Bluetooth off when you don't need them. Never allow your device to automatically join an open network.
