Gender Differences in Undergraduate Physics Courses: A Comparative Study of Persistence

We have investigated the difference in persistence between male and female students while taking undergraduate physics courses. To quantify the persistence of a certain group of students, we have defined 'persistence index’ as the inverse of the decrease rate of the number of that group of students while taking a specific course. We have collected the data from three consecutive workshops on various topics of physics. After plotting the number of participations against the number of days attended, we have calculated the decrease rates and persistence indices for both male and female student groups on each workshop and compared the persistence indices on a bar diagram. The comparative statistics show that the persistence indices of female student groups are significantly higher than that of male student groups. This leads us to the conclusion that the female students are more persistent than male students while taking an undergraduate physics course.

বিংশ শতাব্দীতে পদার্থবিজ্ঞানের অন্যতম সাফল্য হল স্পেশাল থিওরি অব রিলেটিভিটি। সময় এবং অবস্থানের মধ্যে যে সম্পর্ক থাকতে পারে- সেই অভাবনীয় ধারণাটি প্রথমবারের মত মানুষের কাছে এসেছিল এই তত্ত্বের মাধ্যমে। দৈর্ঘ্যের সংকোচন, সময়ের প্রসারণের মত বিষয়গুলির সাথে উচ্চবেগে স্থান-কালের পরিবর্তনের পারস্পরিক সম্পর্ক এগুলো শুধু কাগজে-কলমে সীমাবদ্ধ ছিল না, মানুষ এক্সপেরিমেন্টালি পেয়েছে প্রতিটির প্রমাণ।

প্রায় কয়েক শতাব্দী ধরে সত্য মনে করা গ্যালিলিয়ান রিলেটিভিটির মতবাদ থেকে বেরিয়ে এসে কিভাবে স্পেশাল রিলেটিভিটির জন্ম হল, নিউটনের সূত্রে স্পেশাল রিলেটিভিটি কি পরিবর্তন আনে এবং ফিজিক্সে এটার চমৎকার সব ফলাফল নিয়েই এবার কমিউনিটি অব ফিজিক্স আয়োজন করতে যাচ্ছে স্পেশাল রিলেটিভিটির উপর কর্মশালা “1st Workshop on Relativity: The Speed of Light is the Limit”। এই আয়োজনটি ৫ দিন ব্যাপী হবে। কর্মশালাটি মূলত বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় পর্যায়ের ২য়,৩য় ও ৪র্থ বর্ষের শিক্ষার্থীদের জন্য করা হচ্ছে। তবে ১ম বর্ষের শিক্ষার্থীরাও চাইলে অংশ নিতে পারে।

ওয়ার্কশপের শেষে থাকছে একটি ওপেন বুক এক্সাম ও ফলের ভিত্তিতে পুরষ্কার বিতরণ অনুষ্ঠান। পুরো ওয়ার্কশপ করা সকল অংশগ্রহণকারীই Certificate of participation পাবে।

ওয়ার্কশপের জন্য দেওয়া এখনকার তারিখ ভেন্যু পাওয়ার সাপেক্ষে পরিবর্তন হবে। ওয়ার্কশপের চূড়ান্ত তারিখ অতি সত্বর ইভেন্ট পেজে জানানো হবে।

As the theory of one of the four fundamental forces known to physicists, electromagnetism has its own rightful place in the studies of physics. Yet, electromagnetism is often found to be most challenging. Problems involving electromagnetism are often mathematically more demanding and non-algorithmic in nature. Intense vector calculus and partial differential equations are required for studying the topic.

Considering interest of many, Community of Physics has organized a five-day workshop focusing on classical electromagnetism. The workshop covered both electrostatics & magnetostatics and the sacred laws of electrodynamics: The Maxwell’s equations, including required mathematical demands. The workshop was basically designed for university students but was kept open for all. The workshop was totally free for the audience.

The event of the workshop was held in Udvash Academic and Admission Care, 5 English Road, Dhaka. Governing body of the organization voluntarily supported us providing the venue. Starting from July 12, 2016, the workshop lasted for five days. There were back-to-back sessions of ten hours each day, with one-hour lunch break. Intense topics, even with this long exposure, couldn't break the enthusiasm of the participants. The workshop ended through a certificate giving and closing ceremony on July 16, 2016.

This time fourteen students have taken part in the examination held in the fifth day. Maruf Ahmed from University of Dhaka has secured the first position, Farhana Khan from Viqarunnisa Noon School and College has secured the second position and Imtiaz Taimoor from Military Institute of Science and Technology has secured the third position.

We express our gratitude to all the presenters for their well-organized presentations and their sleepless hard works for preparing them. "Why do the planets orbit in ellipses? Why are there two high-tides a day rather than one? Why does the water flowing down a plughole swirl? Who will win the race going down an inclined frictionless plane, a rectangular box or a sphere?" To answer these and many other perplexing questions in classical mechanics, Community of Physics has organized “1st Workshop on Classical Mechanics: From Newton to Lagrange”. Despite being an age old theory, in many areas like space-vehicle designing, it is the only theory to work with. But many students find the subject challenging due to its mathematical nature. Considering the importance of the subject and the demand of the audience, Community of Physics has taken the step to organize the workshop focusing on classical mechanics, especially, the Newtonian formulation.

The workshop was basically designed for university students, but was kept open for all. More than four hundred students, from various universities and colleges across the country, had applied for the workshop. Only 81 of the applicants were selected. Projectile motion, oscillation and Kepler motion were covered in the workshop together with fundamental theories such as Newton's laws of motion, Newtonian gravity, motion in non-inertial frames and Lagrangian formalism.

The event of the workshop was held in Udvash Academic and Admission Care, Malek Tower, Farmgate, Dhaka 1205. Governing body of the organization voluntarily supported us providing the venue. The whole event was sponsored by Lalbagh Chemical and Perfumery Works Limited. Starting from February 17, 2016, the workshop lasted for five days. There were back-to-back sessions of eight hours each day, with one-hour lunch break. Intense topics, even with this long exposure, couldn't break the enthusiasm of the participants. The workshop ended through a certificate giving and closing ceremony on February 21, 2016.

In the examination, held on the fifth day of the workshop, Sheikh Asif Imran Shouborno secured first position, Mursalin Habib secured second position and Shaumik Rahman Ayon secured third position. All of them were from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology.

Mathematics has played a crucial role in the advancement of Physics, and mathematical language has become essential for the formulation of the laws of Physics. Vector calculus is, perhaps, the most important mathematical tool for physicists. This important branch of mathematics deals with differentiation and integration of vector fields. Vector calculus is used extensively in physics and engineering, especially, in the description of electromagnetic fields, gravitational fields and fluid flow. Thus to have a good understanding of Physics, good knowledge of vector calculus is required. Keeping this in mind, Community of Physics has organized “1st Workshop on Vector Calculus”. Though it was primarily planned to organize a five-day workshop, it was extended to six days due to schedule failure.

The workshop was basically designed for university students, but was kept open for all. The workshop started studying basic vector algebra and single variable differential & integral calculus. Basic objects like scalar & vector fields, algebraic & differential operations of vectors, multivariable integrations and fundamental theorems of vector calculus were discussed in full length in the workshop. Some generalizations of the theory like vector calculus in curvilinear coordinates and vector calculus on curved manifolds were also included. As an application of the theory, Maxwell’s equations of classical electrodynamics was covered in the workshop.

The event of the workshop was held in Udvash Academic and Admission Care, Malek Tower, Farmgate, Dhaka 1205. Governing body of the organization voluntarily supported us providing the venue. Starting from December 28, 2015, the workshop lasted for six days. There were back-to-back sessions of eight hours each day, with one-hour lunch break. Intense topics, even with this long exposure, couldn't break the enthusiasm of the participants. The workshop ended through a certificate giving and closing ceremony on January 02, 2016.

In the examination, held on the sixth day of the workshop, Imd Mohaimin Saquib from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology secured first position, Abid Hossain Mishal from Shahjalal University of Science and Technology secured second position and Zabir Ahamed Shehab from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology secured third position.

“Who said that the differential equations are boring, difficult or hard to solve? If you are interested, differential equations can be your best friends.” -- With this belief Community of Physics has organized “1st Workshop on Differential Equations”. To solve many problems in Physics, whether it is Newton's equation of motion in classical mechanics or Maxwell's equations in electrodynamics, Einstein's equation in general relativity, even Schrödinger's equation in quantum mechanics or anything else, solving differential equations is a must. To understand Physics and go ahead with it one has to solve a lot of differential equations. Realizing the importance of it, Community of Physics has taken the step to organize a workshop focusing on differential equations.

Venue of the workshop was Suritola Model Government Primary School, situated at 135, Shahid Najrul Islam Shoroni, Kotoali, Dhaka 1100. It was a four-day long workshop from June 12, 2015 to June 17, 2015. Basically, it was designed for freshmen and sophomores of universities but was kept open for all. Exam was taken on June 17, 2015 and certificates were given according to students' merit.

Though less students were present than expectation on the first day due to rainy weather, the discussions on topics were breath-taking. It was hard for the lecturers to keep up with time. But the satisfaction of the students at the end was like a gift to the organizers. The workshop was carried on from the morning till the afternoon, with short lunch break at noon on June 12, June 15 and June16. With a little discussion, followed by exam and closing ceremony, the 1st Workshop on Differential Equations had came to an end on June 17, 2015. Nafis Fuad, Golam Kabir & Rayhan Rashed was awarded with 1st, 2nd and 3rd positions in the examination.

Differential equations constitute a large and very important branch of physics and modern mathematics. From the early days of the calculus the subject has been an area of great theoretical research and practical applications. Differential equations occur in connection with numerous problems that are encountered in the various branches of science and engineering. Many laws in physics involve various rates of change of one or more quantities with respect to other quantities. In the mathematical formulation, the various rates of change are thus expressed by various derivatives and the physical laws themselves become mathematical equations involving derivatives, that is, differential equations.

A natural question now is how does one obtain useful information from differential equation? The answer is essentially that if it is possible to do so, one solves the differential equation to obtain the solution. If this is not possible, one uses the theory of differential equation to obtain information about the solution.

Considering the ample appearance of differential equations in physics, Community of Physics is organizing a four-day workshop on the topic, 2nd Workshop on Differential Equations. Starting from October 11, 2016, the workshop will end on October 14, 2016. The venue of the event is Suritola Model Govt. Primary School, 135, Shaheed Syed Nazrul Islam Sarani, Kotwali, Dhaka-1100.

The workshop is meant for the University students, but 11th and 12th grade students with knowledge of basic calculus are also allowed. Online registration is going on. পদার্থবিজ্ঞানের আলোচনায় ব্যবহৃত বিশুদ্ধ গণিতের একটি অত্যন্ত গুরুত্বপূর্ণ শাখা হচ্ছে ব্যবকলনী সমীকরণ বা Differential Equations। বলবিদ্যা হতে শুরু করে সাধারণ আপেক্ষিকতা পর্যন্ত পদার্থবিজ্ঞানের সকল শাখায় রয়েছে ব্যবকলনী সমীকরণের ব্যবহার। বস্তুতপক্ষে, পদার্থবিজ্ঞানের প্রায় সকল সমীকরণই তার প্রাথমিক রূপে একটি ব্যবকলনী সমীকরণ । তাই, পদার্থবিজ্ঞান শিক্ষার একটি অপরিহার্য অঙ্গ এই ব্যবকলনী সমীকরণের সমাধান ।

সহজে ব্যবকলনী সমীকরণ লিখে ফেলতে পারলেও তার সমাধান বের করা মোটেই সহজ কাজ নয়। প্রতিটি ফর্মের জন্য ভিন্ন সমাধান মনে রাখা রীতিমত অসম্ভব । এই কঠিন কাজটিকেই সহজে করার জন্য আমাদের এই আয়োজন। এবার... থাকছে, রৈখিক সমীকরণের পাশাপাশি কতিপয় বিশেষ অরৈখিক সমীকরণ নিয়ে আলোচনা।

মূলত কলেজ ও বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের প্রথম ও দ্বিতীয় বর্ষের শিক্ষার্থীদের জন্য কোর্স প্ল্যান করা হয়েছে, তবে একাদশ ও দ্বাদশ শ্রেণীর শিক্ষার্থীরা অংশগ্রহণ করতে পারবে।
