My first G+ post in a while, and also my first blog post in a while. This one is about the dangers of EventBus on mobile (or anywhere really). While the design pattern has some uses, it can easily be abused.

http://colintmiller.com/dont-use-eventbuses-on-mobile/
A practice that I've noticed infecting some mobile developers is attempting to use an EventBus in replacement of method calls. The idea being to introduce high levels of decoupling where publishers of events need to never know who will be...

Finished Grukk Face-Rippa from the Stormclaw starter set today. I spent some extra time on him since he's my warlord. Quite pleased on how he came out.

Thanks. I had a lot of fun on the black and yellow striped tube on the gun.

I finished my ork warlord Grukk Face-Rippa from the Stormclaw starter set today. He was a lot of fun to paint and I put in some extra work as he's the general to my new space ork army. The most fun was doing the yellow and black stripes on the hose of his gun. I also think the eyes is the squig came out pretty well.

This is the results of my first attempts at using an airbrush. I used 3 colors with the airbrush, a quick wash, a few dry brushes, then painted all of the skulls and shell cases individually. Was pretty quick and looks quite decent.

This is a GW Crater for 40k.

That's great work Colin. For first attempts with an air brush, you are going to be scary as you get more experience with it.

Brought in a portable painting station to work today and painted after work while I waited for a ride. Great way to get some skin work done on some orks.

They're great travel brushes. They're better than GW brushes and I like them for base coats and as my travel brushes. The handle is thicker than normal brushes which isn't bad, but different. I prefer my Rosemary ones, but I'd recommend trying these out.

It seems like all of the stupid flashlight apps on the app store have ads or other annoyances. Just to turn your camera flash on. Seems stupid.

Then I remembered I'm an android programmer and wrote a flashlight app in 15 minutes. Problem solved.

It's dependant on the vendor. Some manufacturer's decide to modify base Android to have it built in, other's do not. In any event the controls are there and there's simple apps you can get/make for doing it, but it's not built into open-sourced android (I assume it's because android is not just run on phones and not all phones have cameras/flashes, where as iOS has a lot fewer devices to track)

This is my second attempt at using an airbrush. This was a combination of airbrush, washed, dry brush, and fine detail work with a brush. Definitely faster than just doing it all by hand, and I think it came out quite nicely.

The Unreal 4 engine was just made free. I think this is wonderful as it opens up a really powerful tool to game makers on all platforms. It also sets some real competition for unity, and any competition like this is great. It's also just a really good engine.

Just in time for the holidays, I'm releasing version 0.5 of SimpleNoSQL today. The main additions are read/write locks on buckets to make operations atomic in nature. Also there's a SynchronousRetrieval class that will let you get your results in a synchronous fashion. The library really makes saving and retrieving data from disk incredibly easy.

A wonderful meal that delighted and surprised my wife and I. We had just learned about Murphy Ave recently and decided to go back to that area for dinner last night. I had chosen the last restaurant (which was kind of 'meh'), so last night my wife chose Tarragon. I was really surprised on how excellent everything was. We started out with a Beef Carpaccio Crostini that smelled amazing and tasted even better. For dinner my wife had a chicken special they were running which was quite tasty and had a really nice and delicate potato pancake; rather than the usual overly greasy ones. I had the Prime Tri-Tip and after the first bite I was impressed. It was some of the best beef I've had since I moved to the bay area a year ago. The Gratin Potatoes that came with it were lightly herbed and delicious, and the veggies were awesome. Since we checkedin with FourSquare we got a free dessert to share and decided on the Butterscotch Banana Rum Cake which was so against my diet but so worth it. It was nice to have something delicious and sweet at the end without it making us feel heavy and bloated. The service was quite good and our waiter was attentive without being annoying. He even apologized for serving me before my wife because one of the plates was too hot for him to do it the other way. I thought that was quite lovely. I rarely write reviews about restaurants as most are just basic and not worth the time of writing one. Tarragon impressed me enough that I think others should try it for dinner when in the area.

I loved this little hole-in-the-wall Japanese place when my wife and I found it. It is the first place in the bay area that I've found that serves takoyaki and it's just about as good as the stuff I got in Japan. Everything we ordered was delicious. It's a small place so seating can be a pain, but it's worth it for a small group on an off day. Definitely a favorite for me.
