Why doesn’t our knowledge of Jesus today produce the same level of radical discipleship than with the early Christians? Is it simply that our age is a superficial age where faith has been privatised and everything is just a matter of opinion?

To me, one reason stands out – we have lost the understanding of who Jesus really is.

“And now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love.” (1 Corinthians 13:13 NKJV)

Living faith lays hold of God’s accomplished truths, his Word. It has nothing to do with our human imagination, or mental powers, or wishes, or desires or dreams. But, we also read in Hebrews 11:27 that faith enables us to ‘see the invisible’. This reveals the power of vision. We can understand the mysteries of God by faith, lay hold of God’s promises by faith, and by faith we can certainly see the promise of God ahead of its fulfillment.

God’s Spirit witnesses to the eyes of our heart giving us a visual understanding of what we are believing him for.

The power of vision is a vital part of faith. We must learn how to co-operate with this envisioning process of the Holy Spirit. By faith we can see a vision of the thing God has spoken about and hold that vision before our eyes until it is accomplished in our lives.

Whenever we turn away from God we automatically follow idolatrous substitutes for him. Therefore, right belief concerning who God is and how he meets our needs is vital for a changed life. Wrong beliefs concerning where our true worth is to be found rob us of our passion for Christ. We need to regain this passion and reject all false ideas of happiness and fulfilment.

Once we see how all-sufficient the Lord is for for us, we will be willing to identify and abandon our idols and the negative beliefs that give them power over us.

Usually, our idolatrous goals reveal our fundamental characteristics as people. These are the things that make us tick, the buttons others so easily press. Therefore, if we are to change from the inside out, we must challenge and deal with these idolatrous goals. Once we discover that our fullness is in Christ, the true path to life becomes clear and we begin to delight in that path.

My return to London from Bournemouth to join Wynne was the result of a particular call from the Holy Spirit. It is difficult to describe, but there was definite spiritual connection between us. He was my spiritual father, my mentor and I felt as if I was a Joshua to a Moses, an Elisha to an Elijah. I never dreamed that as those leader-servant relationships led to succession, so one day I would succeed Wynne as Senior Minister of KT.

Everything we run away from has power over us; everything we go through, we conquer.

“There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.” (Romans 8:1)

The absence of condemnation from your life is due totally to the grace of God you received freely by faith when you believed in Jesus. He took all your sin and condemnation on the cross, carrying it there for you. You will never see it again. Jesus has removed it once for all! Hallelujah!

But notice the difference this should make in your life. Pardon from sin is not a license to carry on sinning. In fact, it is supposed to lead you to deny your fleshly desires and to walk according to the dictates of God’s Spirit in you. Grace is not a cover up, or a cloak for sin. Those who know His grace and forgiveness also know how utterly offensive it is to God to carry on sinning. Sin put Christ on the cross. That’s how terrible it is. Jesus paid for your sin with His life’s blood. That’s why He wants us to be done with it forever. If you have truly accepted Christ as your Saviour and have experienced the joy of having God’s condemnation lifted from your shoulders, then know that as a believer, sin has absolutely no place in your life.
