in where i attempt to keep track of bitcoin related resources and wonder what 2015 will look like
This is more for me, rather than anyone else (just like everything here), but its worth keeping track of the Bitcoin scene in Malaysia (at a time when Bitcoin is tanking). For Bitcoin news, its Bitcoin Malaysia - its no CoinDesk, but the founder, Colbert Lau, does evangelise Bitcoin quite a lot. It is from…

IRC never went away for opensource users. But we're starting to see it come back with different "skins" for mainstream users - via things like Slack (hot productivity/collaboration startup) and Kik (messenger app, which is nowhere near as popular as Whatsapp)
IRC never really went away. If you are a participant in the opensource world, there’s a good chance you’ve fired up an IRC client to connect to your project channel (eg. #maria) to chat with people involved with the project. Slack is becoming really popular, and from what I can tell, it looks very much…

Remember to always be writing down ideas... But when you have an idea don't immediately jump to the "how do I get money for it?" -- learn to ideate on that too
I think it's really important to write ideas everyday. In fact, it’s a new year — if you don’t already have a notebook and pen, get one. I personally rely on Evernote, a notebook (lately, I’m starting to think I might like the Evernote Moleskine notebooks - I’ve started with the Moleskine Evernote Business Notebook for meetings)…

Recently, Benedict Evans from Andreessen Horowitz wrote a piece entitled “New Questions in Mobile” where he reset the conversation on mobile platforms. The purpose for this post is to provide some insight to three of the five questions with an Asian perspective: the battle between the Android OEMs focusing on Samsung, Xiaomi & Micromax, the fate of Android and the battle of messaging apps where I predict Facebook will clone WeChat. I will be discussing this with +Sameer Singh in an upcoming +Analyse Asia  episode in Jan 2015.
Recently, Ben Evans reset the conversation mobile platforms & ecosystems. In this essay, I seek to address three of the five questions posed specifically focusing on the Android OEMs, the fate of Android and the messaging apps battle with a prediction that Facebook will clone WeChat in 2015.

+MariaDB is now 5 years old. We had our first GA release February 1 2010. Here's a quick look back. Also much thanks to all users, developers, contributors!
I stopped working on MySQL at Sun Microsystems in late 2009 (after a lengthy period of garden leave), to join Monty Program Ab, and was greatly anticipating a MariaDB release that we could take to market. The first GA release of MariaDB came out February 1 2010 - MariaDB 5.1.42. Today is MariaDB’s 5th birthday!…

Presented at linux.conf.au 2015. This talk is an extended version of the keynote address presented at OSCON 2014. Video will be posted at: https://www.youtube.com/user/linuxconfau2015/videos Over the past 3 years, we’ve witnessed the discussion of the role of women and other underrepresented groups in technology grow broader, deeper and louder. From Wired to the Wall Street Journal, we’ve heard the message that we all have a problem. Even more ex...

Some books are worth re-reading. Why not try them in a different format like audiobooks?
The first book from Malcolm Gladwell I read was The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference back in 2007. I continued to read Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking in 2008. And then it seems I’ve weaned off Gladwell, with the exception of his pieces in magazines like The New…

how are you listening to music in 2015?
Catching up on reading, it's worth reading Taylor Swift is the music industry. There's good insight as to why she pulled her music from Spotify (an all or nothing deal; contrast with Rdio that still has her albums except the latest 1989). Today I learned that a music CD in Malaysia costs RM62.90. When I…
