Behind The Lens || Wahclella Falls

Last day in Portland means yet another 430am wake up call (4th in a row) to head to the Columbia River Gorge one last time in order to avoid both the crowds and the sun, allowing me to work with pretty even light.

This is Wahclella Falls, where I spent the better part of the morning moving through the streams in my wadders to get different angles and perspectives on the well photographed waterfall.

This afternoon it is off to Vancouver, BC via the Amtrak Cascades train (one of my favorite train rides in the US).

"Titcomb Reflections"
Wind River Range, WY

There is always something special about jagged peaks reflecting at sunrise. I need to make my way back to the Wind River Range in Wyoming, arguably my favorite place in the state.

"Enjoying the View"
Christmas Island, Australian Territory

Do you think that nature takes time to appreciate itself? Here you see a famous Red Crab from Christmas Island enjoying the tropical view from a place known as "Flying Fish Cove" on the tropical remote island found in the heart of the Indian Ocean. Do you think it likes what it see? :)

To learn more about Christmas Island, check out this free travel photo guide I put together on my blog. It will walk you though how to get there, different accommodations options and even shares the GPS points to my favorite spots.

Windows/PC for Photographers

While many creatives enjoy working in the Mac/Apple space, the truth is that there are still billions of Windows users out there that love photography too. By moving from an Apple Eco system to Windows a few years back I was able to save thousands of dollars while maintaining similar performance.

If you have a few minutes, check out a series of short videos I put together with the folks over at G-Technology that talk about my move to Windows, custom building your own PC and my image backup workflow process.

"The Cliff Edge"
Christmas Island, Australian Territory

What is it about the ocean and long exposures that simply work so well together. While there are times when I want a dream like look with the water, I often aim for  more of a balance between motion and freezing action. In many situations, this means using a shutter speed of around .6 seconds. This allows me to retain some texture details in the waves while simultaneously capturing the movement of the ocean. In a scene like this this dramatic coast line on Christmas Island, it is the perfect mix of motion and emotion.

"Sunrise over Lily Beach"
Christmas Island, Australian Territory

Last year one of the more unique locations that I got the chance to explore was a place called "Christmas Island", located 600 miles off the western coast of Australia...in the heart of the Indian Ocean. This wild and incredibly beautiful island paradise was unlike most places I have ever photographed. It was wild...almost prehistoric in nature. The best way to describe it would be to say that if Hawaii and the Galapagos Island had a baby together...it would be Christmas Island.

If you want to learn more about Christmas Island, be sure to check out my free travel photo guide I put together for exploring this incredible place. Also be sure to check out +Christmas Island Tourism as they can be a great resource for info & logistical planning as well.

Behind the Lens || Columbia River Gorge

What do you do when you only have two days left in Portland and the weather forecast shows nothing but blue bird skies? You wake up at 4:45am and head out into the Columbia River Gorge and photograph a few waterfalls while they are still in the shade.

Here you can see Panther Creek note Shington side of the gorge. Can't wait to edit this one!

"Canadian Rockies from Above"
Alberta, Canada

Some times the only way you can truly capture a location with a proper sense of scale is from a helicopter thousands of feet up in the air. It is no wonder that the Canadian Rockies are easily one of my favorite regions in the world to photograph and explore.

It is almost that time of year again for one of the most incredible light show displays in the world. Starting at the end of May and running through early June, "Vivid Sydney" kicks off it annual event by putting on an impressive light show all over down town Sydney, which includes many iconic locations, such as the Sydney Opera House seen here.

Nothing says Island Paradise quite like tortoise green waters and isolated rocks. This shot was taken at sunrise one morning while at Flying Fish Cove on Christmas Island, located 600 miles off the western coast of Australia, in the heart of the Indian Ocean. It was taken with a +Sony  #a7r .

"Martin Point Sunset"
Christmas Island, Australian Territory

One of the best things about photographing the sunsets over the ocean is having the ability to utilize a slower shutter speed to simultaneously capture motion in the water below. For this shot I used a +Sony  #a7r   and a wide 16-35 f/2.8 ZA lens to bring a variety of different elements into the frame.

"Spring in the Pacific Northwest"
Emerald Falls Trail, Columbia River Gorge, OR

Spring is here and there is no better place to spend it that up in the lush green forests of the Pacific Northwest. In less than two weeks I will be heading back up to this beautiful part of the US to photograph a water fall or two, maybe some lush green forests and hike into the back country to find a few remote gems. Needless to say, I can't wait!

This photo was taken with the #LGG4 new pro camera app that both allows you to shoot in manual as well as the RAW image file format.
