I wanted to post this photo In memory of the 12 Sherpas that lost their lives (and the families they leave behind) in yesterday's devastating avalanche above the Khumbu Icefall on Mt. Everest, making it the worst climbing accident in the mountains history.

This shot of a Sherpa guide with my friend Alex Velzeboer was taken as we crossed over the Kongma La Pass (18,539ft) making our way to Everest Base Camp on my last trip to the region, in 2011.

For those interested, here is a short video clip I made as I crossed over the ridge line:

"Transition"
The Blood Moon - Lunar Eclipse

This is a composite of a sequence of photos I took the other night to capture the transformation of the Blood Moon here in Colorado, high up in the Rockies.

These shots were all taken with the +Sony  #a7r  and Canon 500mm f/4 telephoto lens. Next time I might opt for a true telescope that I can attach my camera to :)

A small panorama taken in Iceland from a few months back as I was testing the new "Google Camera" app for the +Android team.

One of the new features are Panoramas and Photospheres that reach up to 50mp in resolution and contain a ton of detail!

"The Evergreen Flow"
Sitka, Alaska

http://bit.ly/WildAlaska

Situated in the Tongass National Forest...Sitka, Alaska has an abundance of beautiful waterfalls, lush green forests and a variety of wild life, including bald eagles and the great Alaskan Coastal Brown Bear, which can be larger in size than Grizzlies.

Photo Details:
Camera: Nikon D800
Lens: Nikon 24-70 f/2.8
ISO: 80
Exposure: f/22 at 5.0 secs

Post Processing Details:
The biggest challenge with most images of forests is getting the green color just right. Most of the time greens in a "properly exposed" photo of a forest will come out more gray then that lush dark green. To fix this, I used Lightroom to make some simple adjustments to contrast, vibrance and the shadow sliders. I then went into Photoshop and opened up +onOne Software's Perfect Effects to apply a variety of filters, including one for adjusting the green hue to more accurately reflect the green I wanted for this scene. Once back in Photoshop, I then cleaned up any distracting leaves and small branches from the scene using the content aware brush.

If you are looking to explore Alaska, I still have a spot or two open for my August Alaska workshop. More info can be found here:

I have enjoyed working closely with +Android over the last few months to help them with their "Google Camera" app release this morning for all Android devices running 4.4.

I have been using this software for while and have truly been enjoying the results, especially the Panorama and Photosphere modes which now can reach up to 50mp in size, which is drastically more resolution and detail then before!

For those not on 4.4, I am sure some sort of support will come to previous Android versions, but until then I will be pushing for all my phones to get 4.4 or higher so I can enjoy these features across all my devices!

Today we’re launching Google Camera, a new app for your Android phone or tablet that makes it easy to take quick photos and videos. And being behind the lens just got more fun with new creative picture modes.

Sleek Design. The 100% viewfinder gets out of your way while capturing the maximum resolution of the scene (no dropped pixels). And the extra large capture button is easy to press so your eyes never lose sight of the subject.

Lens Blur. Emphasize the subject while blurring the background for an SLR-like shot with shallow depth-of-field (or bokeh). You can even change the subject in focus after taking the shot.

Improved Panorama. New higher resolution panoramas capture the full width and detail of a scene.

Photo Sphere. Immersive 360 degree photo spheres let you look up, down and all around...now at up to 50 megapixels! For the first time available on non-Nexus devices.

Google Camera is now available on the Play store (http://goo.gl/llsZjx), and works on all phones and tablets running Android 4.4+ KitKat. We’re just getting started, and in the months ahead we'll make Google Camera available to more devices, helping make photography easier, faster and more fun.

Check out our Research Blog to learn more (http://goo.gl/lUDfi8).

I'm not going to be available to attend, but I do have a question...

I've always thought that it's pivotal to find great subject matter to be able to take great pictures. That makes things hard with landscapes because some landscapes just aren't as interesting as others. Can you give any pointers/strategies on seeking out those stunningly impressive landscapes in areas you may be new to?

The World From Above

The +Matador Network just published an epic list of 46 aerial shots from famous locations, such as the Grand Prismatic Spring in Yellowstone National Park. This makes me want to take my drone out and capture more aerial work!
