A stroll up the beautiful Lumsdale valley, near Matlock. A mix of wooded gorge and ruined mills - designated a Scheduled Monument by English Heritage., and preserved by the Arkwright Society who have placed a number of excellent illustrated information boards at key points.
The Bentley Brook, which flows down the valley, once provided the power for the series of mills used for making gunpowder, cotton spinning, bleaching, grinding corn, bone for china, and minerals for paint manufacture.

Scenic cycle trip with easy gradient - along the Peak Forest and Macclesfield canals, which are being restored and are more and more popular with narrow boat users, pedestrians and cyclists. Back to the start via Lyme Park. Just a pity the promised sunshine never appeared.
