Advertising can grow sales for a building trades or contracting business, but only if you follow the rules.
A  trades/contracting client recently called to tell us that two competitors were moving aggressively into his market. He noticed their ads popping up in the local media (newspaper & radio). He outlined a couple of responses (newspaper and billboard advertising), and asked what we thought of them.Getting at meaningful measurements of ROI on advertising is one of the more challenging questions for a small business owner. When trying to decide if a ...

People love both lists and horror stories. The combination of the two is the genesis for a question we often get asked: “Do you have a list of obvious mistakes you have seen small businesses make? Please don’t leave out the gory details.”Yes. You bet I do.When we do our initial assessment for any business, we work with three sets of checklists: Five Business Functions: Management, Marketing, Finance, Operations, Human Resources Three Constants: T...

Entrepreneurship isn't Sexy
It's easy to get caught up in the romantic notions of start-ups. The entrepreneurial manifestation portrayed in Hollywood biopics and quasi-factual narratives has given rise to an entire generation of "wantrapreneurs," a term that couldn't be more fitting.Let's get something straight. There is nothing romantic or sexy about starting a company unless you consider staring at a computer screen, or phone dialing pad, or car steering wheel for hundred...

Stop using learning - seminars, self-improvement courses, webinars - as a way to avoid actually doing.
Stop using learning - seminars, self-improvement courses, webinars - as a way to avoid actually doing. Learning won't help your business, only doing will. Especially in the world of retail, there is always one more sales seminar, one more social media camp, one more 'working with Gen Y' webinar.

Every time we ignore inconvenient advice we fail to see that our behaviour is exactly like that of the extremely powerful and corrupt.
The powerful are human. That seems like an empty truism, yet we behave as if it isn't. We assume that the ultra-powerful have a super-human capacity to stay out of trouble. Why are we surprised every time someone with power on the level of a Dominique Strauss-Kahn or Conrad Black of the world ...

Fantastic selection, a good focus on local products and produce, and a very friendly staff. This is a historical grocery business that has found a way to successfully offer value in changing times. Love that it is so close to home.

The best men's clothing store in Victoria. Probably one of the best in the province. Focused selection; great mix of American, Canadian, and European labels.

One of the most amazing businesses on Vancouver Island for people who love food and love local. And... yes, love meat. This is the correct address for the retail location. I don't know why the primary Google listing is on Koksilah.

One of the most fun places to get cocktail supplies in Victoria. Luxardo maraschinos and various bitters including paychauds.

What a great bar. The cocktails are classics and beautifully balanced. The room strikes that challenging note of being both elegant and relaxed. There are echos of mid - 20th century values yet they make anyone feel comfortable. If you are in Seattle, and you are a fan of great cocktail bars this is a must-go. I see the odd mention of this being up-scale. We found Olivers reasonable given the quality of the ingredients and the VERY generous pours!
