Great piece. The girls attend Ezell-Harding and it is a heck of a school.

Hyperlocal publishers, even if they were journalists just a few weeks ago, have to get serious about the business side of things. The consequences are simply too great.
I served as publisher for three different companies before starting my own thing. They were various sizes. Granite Publications was 23 papers, mostly weeklies, in Texas. Heartland Publications was, I think, 50-something papers, a mix of dailies and weeklies, scattered everywhere. And Gannett.

Drawing the line is tough and it seems everyone else knows what I'm doing right and what I'm doing wrong. Some introspection and the idea of scaling DOWN.
When I was first named publisher, I had a huge challenge that kept jumping in my face. The challenge was me. Specifically, I had huge eyes. I'd look at the next community over, or the next town, or county and think, "My newspaper could conquer them."I was always looking geographically to grow. Can we start a paper there? Can we expand our coverage to include that county? Can I start a new product to reach that new market? The problem is that I just...

Introduction
What can you say about me?

My experience includes senior-level management roles at daily and weekly newspapers and digital news operations. I've also spent significant time working in public relations and social media and have published more non-fiction magazine articles than I can count.

However, we are all much more than where we work, right?

I am a husband, a judo player, and a Christian. I am also a stamp collector and an avid reader who enjoys mysteries, science fiction, biographies and history.
Bragging rights
My wife. I'm a Coast Guard veteran, an Eagle Scout and a judo black belt.

I called Mr. Hardy at about 8 a.m regarding an electrical problem in three rooms of my home. He arrived within an hour and took very little time to trouble shoot and repair the problems. He also explained what happened and why, and how I can avoid the problem in the future. He was professional and friendly and I enjoyed talking to him while he worked. I also felt his fees were very competitive and more than fair. Highly recommend.

I stopped here Saturday while visiting family in Asheville. Richard is a very kind man with deep philatelic knowledge. His shop is very clean, neat and organized and he has a wide selection of US (especially mint) and supplies. Great table filled with 10 cent stamps and covers to browse. He made a great deal with me on my purchase. Wish I had more time to spend browsing through everything.

A great company! My wife and I used Invitation Discounters for our wedding invitations, banners and runners, along with other miscellaneous items for our wedding.. First, everything was beautifully done. Their service was fast, efficient and spot on. Tammy did a great job, serving in a consultative role to ensure everything was just perfect for our wedding and that the items she supplied were complementary to the theme of our wedding. We also found their prices to be highly competitive and more than fair. My wife found this company and I'm glad she did. Invitation Discounters' role in our wedding made things a little easier, and anyone who is planning a wedding knows the importance of that.
