I'm going to spend the next few months promoting the latest production from Acting Up Productions, LLC. More importantly, I'm going to chronicle the process in real time on Sold Out Run for you to see exactly what I'm doing in sequence as I market this show.
I’ve had an idea rolling around in my head for a few months now, and today it’s ready to officially announce on the blog. I’m calling it the Open Book Project. What’s the Open Book...

Have any friends who are involved in live performance? Have they ever been part of a great production that didn't get seen by as many people as it should have?

I'm giving away 3 copies of the marketing kit I created in which I lay out the exact approach I take to promote a production (which I've used to sell out shows repeatedly). Viva la art!

"If all you do is hand out free tickets, you won’t find an audience – no matter how amazing your production is. Papering the house is a marketing accelerant. It’s an amplifier. If done correctly it can make your other promotional efforts faster and more effective, but by itself it accomplishes nothing."
Having a full house on opening night is a great way to begin your run. It creates energy and an exciting atmosphere that can accelerate the positive word of mouth about your show, but most...

If your revenue jumped 10% next year, what would you do with the money? What if you had that same amount of money, but it was from a government grant instead of increased revenue? How would it be different?

I've seen up-close shows that were promoted by a team of people with clearly defined roles, and I've also seen multiple shows where the promotion fell on the shoulders of the director who didn't have the time and resources to devote to marketing AND putting a quality product on the stage. The differences in the final box office numbers between these two approaches is staggering.

There are a LOT of factors that go into drawing a crowd for your show. This is one of them.

I'm inviting people to share the big event that's overshadowing your theatre performance. I'll offer my suggestions for pulling in an audience when all the buzz is somewhere else.

This blog is designed to help people who have responsibility for promoting a live performance (either eagerly or sometimes not so eagerly) thrust upon them. My overriding marketing philosophy is to identify the unique traits of your show and use them to grab people’s attention and build an audience. From time to time I touch on tactics specifically intended to build your brand, but for the most part I develop content with a bias toward promoting individual shows. This is the most fundamental part of arts marketing, and you should have a good handle on it before moving on to concepts like audience development and personal branding.
