Several years ago, I identified my weakest area as being writing. I loved teaching math and I enjoyed teaching reading, but writing was so difficult… especially since kids often came to my fourth-grade classroom barely knowing how to put a sentence together.

I spent most of the summer putting together a very solid writing plan with a focus on motivating students using mentor texts. By the end of summer I was very excited about teaching this subject and I know that helped launch my writing program with a bang in the fall.

Have you ever done something similar?

I have the most success during summer breaks when I choose just one area of my teaching to work on and improve. I highly recommend choosing the ONE area that you feel you are weakest in and building up your strength.
And I’m not just talking about going to professional development classes. I’m talking about gathering your lessons and resources and really putting together a plan that works for you.

+imaan moughal Imaan, we have always shared all supplies in our room, so if a child doesn't have any the still have access to the group supplies in the cabinet. I usually end up with extras from what kids and parents bring in at the beginning of the year, so those who don't bring any still end up with enough.

+micksmom2 Area model is not meant to be the final step in learning multiplication, it's an initial, developmental step to move kids in the right direction. Next is the partial product algorithm, then finally the standard algorithm. Too often, however, teachers don't move past the area model quickly enough and kids bog down. Thanks for commenting!
