What do you do when you're enjoying a book but parts of it make you cringe? How do you deal with work that hasn't aged well? Inspired by a brilliant Tweet, I've written down some of my thoughts. 🤔

This week's review: Iain M Banks' 'Consider Phlebas', the first in his Culture series. This book has some fantastic set pieces and awesome futuristic technology, but I didn't love the story and I thought it dragged towards the end. 🚀 👽 💥

This week's review: 'Icebreaker: A Voyage Far North' by Horatio Clare. This is a really fascinating little book that manages to pack in poetic descriptions of sea ice, analysis of Finnish history and politics, and a strong eco message. ❄🌊⛴️

This week's review: the richly detailed 'Alias Grace' by Margaret Atwood. I really enjoyed this fictionalised account of the life of 'murderess' Grace Marks in the 1800s. Did she do it? 🤔

This week's review: 'Homesick for Another World' by Ottessa Moshfegh. Supposedly 'darkly humorous', I got all of the darkness and none of the humour. Probably a book for those with a pretty bleak view of humanity. 😕

Jennifer Lee Rossman's 'Anachronism' is an exciting, fast-paced time travel story, with characters that I instantly cared for and a genuinely brilliant twist at the end (I gasped!). ⏰

This week's review: the brilliantly twisted 'Dark Tales' by Shirley Jackson. She creates neat, domestic situations with sinister undercurrents running beneath them. 🔪
