Did you know? There's only a fortnight until the tax deadline but did you know that the word fortnight doesn't exist in American language. Fortnight, literally meaning fourteen nights, derives from the Old English fowertyne niht when our language had heavy Germanic influence. Prior to Roman influence it was considered that the day began at sunset, a system which came to be known as Florentine reckoning, hence measurement by the number of nights.

Our modern method of measuring dates, the Gregorian calendar, introduced by Pope Gregory XIII, was adopted in October 1582. Had this change not occurred, we would potentially still be using the Julian calendar, which by consequence of how it measured leap years, now runs some 13 days behind our current date.

We have no way of reintroducing the Julian calendar to allow you more time to meet your tax liability but we can arrange a facility in a quick and efficient manner to make sure you do not miss the 31st July deadline. Whether it be January/July tax bill, Corporation tax, VAT or other short term and long lending requirements we have the expertise to arrange a facility that can spread the cost at market leading rates.

Did you know? A week ago today the nation watched the final episode of The Great British Bake Off to be aired on the BBC. Unwilling to better the £75 million paid by Channel 4 for the rights to the program, it brings to an end 6 years of soggy bottoms… but did the BBC know they were sitting on a potential gold mine?

Cakes are big business...The world’s most expensive cake, created by Debbie Wingham, cost a staggering $75 million (or £48.5 million) in 2015! Ordered by a client from the United Arab Emirates, the cake, which took over 1,100 hours to make, was painstakingly hand sculpted. It was commissioned to celebrate their daughter’s joint birthday and engagement. The finished offering weighed a colossal 450kg and featured over 4000 diamonds of one carat or more. This cake is not alone in its hefty price tag, the previous record of £32.4 million was set in 2013. By comparison, the wedding cake created for the marriage of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge was a mere £50,000 in 2011.

The first recorded reference to insurance dates from c.1760BC in the Babylonian Code of Hammurabi. The giant stele, which now resides in The Louvre, Paris, details a collection of 282 personal and commercial laws, including references to loans that a trader could secure on his ship. For an additional cost, it was possible to arrange a loan for the goods they transported so that if the ship sank the loan was not repayable. This was effectively a form of marine insurance — with insurance not as a separate industry to banking, but as an optional add-on to lending.

This is a substantially more cordial law than arguably the most famous one from the tablet: “If a man has destroyed the eye of a man of the gentleman class, they shall destroy his eye…” commonly paraphrased as “an eye for an eye”.

Whilst we cannot help to reduce any eye-watering premiums…. we can assist with finance of your Professional Indemnity Insurance. If you are looking to spread the cost of your insurance, tax, VAT or disbursements over any period we have the expertise to arrange a facility at market leading rates.

Did you know? It was Benjamin Franklin who wrote in a 1789 letter “in this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes”. The earliest recorded tax can be traced back to 2500 B.C. Sumerian tablets of this time detail payments of taxes called ‘burdens’. Money was not coined at this time so payment of tax was in the form of livestock, such as sheep or cattle.

Throughout history taxation has been considered problematic with many recorded examples of discontent. One of the most famous examples in Great Britain’s history is the legend of Lady Godiva. It is alleged that, in the 11th Century, she rode naked through the streets of Coventry to gain a remission from the oppressive taxes imposed by her husband Leofric, Earl of Mercia. Residents were ordered to stay indoors whilst she undertook her task, all obeyed except a tailor, Tom, known afterwards as ‘peeping Tom’.

We do not advocate riding naked through your local town, village or city as an effective method of lowering taxes… but we can assist with finance of your tax liabilities. Whether it be January/July tax bill, Corporation tax, VAT or other short term lending requirements we have the expertise to arrange a facility that spreads the cost at market leading rates.

Did you know? With the EU referendum looming large and the group stages of Euro 2016 reaching their conclusion England is leading the table in one area, even if it’s not the football. The Shard, in London, is the tallest building in the European Union; standing at an imposing 309.6 metres (1016ft) tall. Arguably more impressive is the tower crane that was used in its construction. The giant steel structure stood at 317 metres (1040ft) when the building was completed in 2012. In order to reach the top of buildings these cranes have to grow themselves… Separating below the slewing arm, with the use of hydraulic rams, the crane operator hoists and then positions a new 6 metre section into the ‘neck’ of the mast, the arm is then fixed into position 6 metres higher than before.

We do not have the same head-for-heights that these construction specialists possess but we do understand business finance - learn more about us at www.claratus.com

Did you know? The World’s most expensive egg is The Third Imperial Egg created by the famous Peter Carl Faberge in 1887. Originally commissioned by Tsar Alexander III of Russia as an Easter gift for his wife, the egg was purchased in 2014 by London based jeweller, Wartski, on behalf of a private collector for a reported £20 million.

The discovery of clay tablets, in an area corresponding to what we now know as Iraq, show that merchants carved IOUs using some of the earliest recorded forms of maths to keep track of business. These early forms of invoices have been dated to c.3300 BC. Over 5000 years on and the way we invoice has changed dramatically but keeping on top of accounts receivable is as important as ever.

We do not have the bargaining abilities of the early merchants of Iraq but we do understand business finance. Whether looking to accelerate payments from your entire sales ledger or from a single invoice, release capital to invest in growth or simply smooth cash flow we have the expertise to arrange a facility that works for your business.
