3 months of continuing education study completed. Linda Shacklock, Director of City Physiotherapy & Sports Injury Clinic & Pilates Adelaide CBD is now Post Partum Corrective Specialist Certified. Linda just completed her training under Dr. Sarah Ellis Duvall PT, DPT, CPT, CNC, Physical Therapist Doctorate South Carolina, USA. At City Physio, we have been helping women throughout all the stages of their lives, including during pregnancy, the postpartum period, pre and post-menopause.
This course is designed to help both women and men retrain their bodies to function as they were designed to - getting your breathing and diaphragm to function and fire in conjunction with your core muscles, your pelvic floor and linking it with the rest of your body in the kinetic chain. The approach is individualised and takes your specific needs and history into account.
Who is this suitable for? Everybody that has a body will benefit.
Oftentimes the answer lies in us accepting our body and ourselves, here right now in this moment, in order for our bodies and brain to learn to let go. We need to melt away the neck and jaw tension, release the buttock-clenching and abdominal gripping and minimise our shallow breathing patterns before we can move forward into retraining our muscles properly.
The way we breathe, the way we hold onto stress and tension in our body, what we put into our bodies as fuel and liquids, addressing muscle imbalances, hormones, our posture, foot strength and flexibility, any old injuries, genetics, birth trauma, surgical trauma, the way we sit, the sports or exercise we partake in or what we don't do all make us unique- it's not all about pelvic floor, core muscle or gluteal strengthening or stiff spinal segments or hips although we do address this and much more in Linda's functional tailored approach.

Working on a few different things at once with this fabulous trapeze table exercise. Shoulder stabilisation, spinal flexibility, core muscle engagement and correct breathing. As you can see the patients right shoulder isn't as strong as it should be due to previous arthroscopic surgery. However, with persistence and focus our Pilates Physio is coaching and assisting the patient to relearn new movement patterns.

To book your initial pilates session at City Physiotherapy give us a call on 8212 4886. More information at www.cityphysiotherapy.com.au

Rotator Cuff Injury - What is the Rotator Cuff?

The Rotator Cuff is a vital grouping of four muscles around the shoulder that not only help to move the shoulder individually, but act in unison to stabilise the shoulder during other movements. Rotator Cuff muscles can be injured in a variety of ways however commonly involve the arm in an awkward position like above the head. Rotator Cuff injuries involve the same treatments as other general muscle or tendon injuries however, if left untreated can cause Impingement Syndrome.

What is Impingement Syndrome?
The shoulder is the most common joint in the shoulder for impingement. The top of the arm bone (head of the humerus) experiences upward forces whenever the arm is moved upwards. If the rotator cuff is not functioning effectively, the biomechanics of the shoulder are altered or there is a narrowing of the space on top of the arm and below the collar bone then impingement will occur.

Impingement of the shoulder usually causes inflammation of the bursa and or tendons which run through the space. To help speed up recovery we are able to refer you for an ultrasound guided corticosteroid injection which can help to settle down the area before commencing rehabilitation.

Impingement is a common problem especially in people over 40 years old who have poor posture around the shoulder joint, so why not book an appointment at City Physiotherapy & Sports Injury Clinic Adelaide for an assessment and help yourself by allowing us to advise you on avoiding this potentially difficult problem!
