Microsoft really wants to treat Windows as a service.
Windows 10 is about to drop at the end of the month. When the new OS comes out, it looks like Microsoft will be making some changes to its update policy. The ability to turn updates off entirely will be completely removed.

It's a fact that they want to push it as "software as a service". To my mind, a dishonest marketing model - for example, you can't any longer buy outright a copy of Creative Suite or Photoshop - only rent it - and as soon as you stop paying for it every year it stops working; You're hooked into their product and even if the customer wants to get off the treadmill they can't see any easy, painless way of doing it.

Now, if you allow MS to do this as well, THEY will literally own your equipment, not you. They can do anything they like with it and if you attempt to block or circumvent this, your PC will probably just stop working. And I bet the only way to get it to start working again will be to pay for another copy of Windows.

Anyone who allows forcible installation of proprietary, black box, unscrutinised software is a complete fool. And you can better beleive none of this will be for the good of the consumer, no matter how they dress it up and say its for "security". Especially in today's world. Trust needs to be earned. Not taken as a given.

See, if every patch they pushed were open to scrutiny then I'd feel marginally better. And "secure". But they don't do that. "But that's communism!" To quote earlier attitudes.

I do hope none of the above is true. I really do. Because MS has the chance here to "come clean" and deliver a good OS with modern actual standards. But, based on past experience? I don't trust that to happen as a given.

"Let me be clear. systemd is not the work of the devil, it probably doesn't contain any NSA backdoors, and it isn't the worst piece of software the big Linux distributions are shipping by default. It does address some real problems with Linux, and its approach does have its merits."
Why I dislike systemd. (Published 2015-06-14). As a Linux sysadmin in the 2010s, it's hard not to have an opinion on systemd. But what I find baffling about it is how divisive it is; nearly everyone (or at least the most vocal crowd) seems to either love it or hate it.

It also:  misses the point that this all the things he points as problems are either intentional design decisions oe he is just plain wrong. in one part he talks about sysvinit  being capable of telling him in what "state"  the system would be..breaking news.. sysvinit is stateless  it has zero clue about proccesses, much less about any state of the system, it just starts processes, it does no supervision.

Hmmmm ... OK I'm probably being naïve ,(again) but Iwant to think that MS under Nadella is facing reality (something sorely lacking under Ballmer) and that *nix and Linux are the future and if they want to survive they had better start opening up and start admitting there *are" standards other than their own.

But then again, I realise this may just be wishful thinking and really its embrace, extend and extinguish all over again. And if that's true, fuck them. They don't deserve to survive.

Food is dreadful, the staff ( the janitors ) are mostly police force rejects, or those who were kicked out of the armed forces, or the Ulster paramilitaries, many seem to have a problem with alcohol. The rooms are small and not very well decorated, the toilet is a plastic bowl with a lid (if your lucky) although im told they now have televisions and en suite toilets for teh guests. recreational activitys are limited to a pool table, so guests tend to make their own amusement, boabby bears, madonna's, chickens and the like. All in all my stay was made bearable due to the banter by the other guests and having the odd charge when the janitors go off shift. What i didnt like too much was regularly seeing other guests getting slashed or stabbed before id even had my breakfast, unless it was a guest from B hall (the beasts reside therein mostly). *Tongs On Tour*
