Spring is the perfect time for nature study with so much life bursting forth!  Check out what The Unplugged Family has to say about using #NaturExplorers  as her go to guide for serious (and fun) nature study walks and lessons.

It's Spring! Sort of. I mean, we did have snow this week, but it is officially Spring according to the calendar, so, I'm hopeful! So, it's time for me to share some of NaturExplorer's fantastic SPRING Nature Studies. I...

Can't find time to add nature study to the schedule because there's too much real science to do? You might be glad to know nature study IS science - in-depth, amazing, hands-on, active science that I think your family will LOVE.

Wait. If nature study is science, does that mean we could do nature study instead of science textbooks? Does that mean I could (and maybe should) view nature study as more than just an extra in our…

Can you believe we're already talking about EASTER?? It comes early this year, so now is the time for planning!

Nature Study Through the Holidays is a creative little unit study to take your children through the Biblical Easter story. It's only $5 - and has enough lesson ideas in it that I'm sure you'll be able to use it for at least a few years!

I LOVE listening to podcasts as I wash dishes or put on my makeup each day. You can glean so much information while taking care of daily to-do's.

Recently, I had the honor of talking with +Pam Barnhill of Ed Snapshots on her #YourMorningBasket podcast! We talked all about practical ideas for adding #NatureStudy to your morning time routine.

I hope you can find a few minutes to listen. I think you'll be excited about all the learning possibilities!

My early reader is all grown up now.  Oh, how I wish I had kept a record of all the books she read during her homeschool career!  She was (and still is) a voracious reader.

In some ways, it's easy to teach a gifted reader.  In other ways, it's not.  In this post, I've shared my top six tips for effectively teaching an early reader.  I have touched on phonics, comprehension, reading levels and more!

I don't tend to mention my Living Literature Grammar Packets very often. I'm not sure why because they've been one of the best early grammar tools I've used with my children over the years.

I'm very thankful to Cassandra from The Unplugged Family for her wonderfully kind review after using the curriculum with her nine and ten year olds. She does a better job explaining my curriculum than I do!

Sometimes what you think is disobedience might actually be an issue with auditory cognitive skills. Through fun brain training activities, I helped my son become a MUCH better listener (which meant he actually started doing what he was told!)

Does your child seem to have, um, selective hearing? You tell him (or her) to do this or that and you’re very lucky if one little smidgen of it gets done? Yeah, that can be infuriating to a…

When your homeschooled child heads off to college you finally learn for sure whether all the years spent homeschooling were really as beneficial as you believed.

So far, so good! My daughter has made a smooth transition and has been fully prepared for college - the courses and the atmosphere. Yay!!

One of the things I will never regret is allowing her a little leeway in some class choices. I wrote a post today to share just how we planned these student-led classes.

My college freshman is rocking her equine science studies. I think one reason she’s been so successful is the time I allowed her to study horses during high school science. I’ve writte…

Brain training has been a huge blessing in our homeschool! The best part...all the activities are game-like so my children have never once complained!!

There are just so many, many ways you can support cognitive skills through games. Over time, I'm going to focus on games for all the cognitive skills. Up first - visual attention and visual processing!

I bet you already have a few of the games and puzzles at your house already. Be sure not to miss the activities that require nothing extra at all!

Brain training activities are good for everyone because they build neuron connections. Who couldn’t use a few extra neuron connections, right? I’ve gone into some depth about the what,…

Introduction
I'm an eclectic Charlotte Mason homeschool mom of three children currently in 12th, 9th and 2nd grades.  I've been blogging about our style of homeschooling at Our Journey Westward since 2006.

At Shining Dawn Books, I write and publish the NaturExplorers series, 100+ Creative Nature Walks, Nature by the Season, Nature Study Through the Holidays, Loving Living Math, Living Literature Grammar Packets and Charlotte Mason Homeschooling in 18 Easy Lessons.  I've also written Homeschooling Gifted and Advanced Learners published by Prufrock Press.

I speak regularly at homeschool conferences and gatherings on a variety of encouraging and practical topics. I particularly enjoy offering half and full-day "hands-on" workshops to smaller groups.  My private consultations allow time to specifically address someone's questions and needs.
