If there's a magical bird to go photograph, it's cranes, and here in California, it's our winter visitor, the Sandhill Crane, which visit the wildlife refuges in large numbers to gain weight, pair off, and wait until spring calls them north to breed and start the cycle over again.

And if they are a magical bird, then there's nothing quite as magical as the end of the day when the light is failing and the birds fly in from a day of foraging to roost together in a huge flock for the night in a place safe from predators. If you've never seen an evening fly-in at a refuge, you've missed one of the best moments of sharing this planet with birds.

If you love big birds, you probably love Pelicans. There's something gracious and fascinating about them in flight. This is an adult Brown Pelican photographed while soaring along the coast of Pismo Beach, California.

+Steve Dimock well, I know this place... (seriously...) -- and if you hit it at the right time of year and the right time of day, the birds are flying up right along the edge of the cliff, so literally at eye level and 20-30' away.

Yosemite Nature Notes - Winter Moments

While most visitors come during the summer months, winter is a special time of year in Yosemite National Park

We brought in Anthony from Mike Counsil plumbing to replace a couple of faulty fixtures. He was prompt, on time and did a great job on the replacements. In talking to him, we also realized it made sense to replace the garbage disposal in the kitchen so we added that to the job. We are also working with him on a return visit to replace our aging water heater. Highly recommended.
