Clara is a 93-year-old great-grandmother who lived through one of America's most difficult time periods in history, the Great Depression. In this video, she teaches us how to cook a "Depression Breakfast," just like how she remembers!
The first item on the breakfast menu is sugar cookies. As Clara mixes up the batter, she explains how during the Depression they mostly had buttered-toast and coffee in the mornings. But on Sundays, cookies were what they had for a treat. In her little kitchen she shows us exactly how to make the cookies using the basic ingredients of sugar, eggs, flour, and salt. Next, she demonstrates how to make fresh-ground coffee in an old depression kettle.
While Clara waits for her cookies to bake, she tells more stories about her childhood. She shows the audience pictures of her family and friends - recounting all of her good memories from back in the day. Then finally the treats are done! Clara sets up her table with the Depression Breakfast, which consists of only coffee and simple sugar cookies. She happily dips her baked good into her cup, reminding the audience of how Sunday was the only day of the week that her family would have eaten cookies... Wow, what different times!
