As summer follows spring, so does the third trimester follow the second. You can read about it here, in case you missed my timelier updates on, uh, literally every other social network.

As you may have heard, +Amelia Garcia is pregnant. As is our (my) tradition, the process is getting blogged about. Here's the first post, covering the first trimester.

We surprised my mom (Christine) at work. We gave her a mug emblazoned with lots of adjectives surrounding the words "Dear Grandma", and asked her to read her new gift.

It took her a while to get there (her eyeglasses prescription is really, really high), but it was worth it.

We tried surprising my dad (Charles) with a mug as well (it says "#1 Grandpa"). He was (a) sick and (b) too clever for his own good. His reaction was basically "yeah, I sort of figured." I guess you can't win 'em all.

He was still happy for us, which is what counts. Plus, we still have many years to try our hands at reducing him to tears. Luckily, we have Susan as a co-conspirator.

Amelia's mom, Aurora, was also surprised by our news. She's a big fan of cards, so we got her an Easter-themed card with the word "Grandma" in giant text across the front.

Her incredulity quickly gave way to jubilation, which, you know, is sort of the trajectory we were aiming for.

I have finally (after three years!) posted about the most memorable part of our trip to Japan – our stay at Koyasan, holy site of Shingon Buddhism. We sleep in a temple, take a nighttime stroll through ancient graveyards, and find an unusually attractive pagoda.
