I recently revised a post I wrote for +Photography Blogger , adding quite a few new tips and ideas on how to photograph the autumn foliage this year.

Thanks +Perry Bailey that's kind to say...gearing up for autumn foliage here in Maine - quite nice inland towards Canada but the coast still needs some time.

In my final tutorial on exposure blending, I introduce luminosity masks as a way to combine different exposures seamlessly. Luminosity masks are a powerful editing tool for landscape photographers as the desire to capture dynamic tonal ranges has become increasingly popular, and this often requires blending different exposures together in Photoshop in order to recover any lost detail. With luminosity masks, you can select specific groups of tones for blending, which is ideal for more complex images that have difficult transitions between exposures. In this tutorial, I explain how to create your own set of luminosity masks for HDR blending, and also show you several different ways you can apply these masks to your layer for a softer, natural transition between exposures.

When blending multiple exposures together using layer masks, you’ll eventually run into a situation where refining your mask with freehand brushwork becomes too difficult and time consuming. This step-by-step guide will show you how to achieve a seamless result by creating a refined selection that automatically masks your exposures together with great accuracy. By exploring some of the advanced features of Photoshop, you can create a customized layer mask that instinctively hugs every contour for a flawless HDR blend of exposures.

One of the many reasons why I love Maine is for its rocky coastline. From a photography standpoint, it provides me with ample opportunity to create a unique composition; I could easily visit the same location many times over and still discover something new. Differing combinations of focal length, depth of field, shutter speed, and light can contribute to an entire portfolio of the same location, with each image having its own distinctive character.

From a more personal perspective, my magnetism to the Maine coast runs much deeper. I’ve spent years visiting the same beaches, and each time evokes a new experience for me. Winter or summer, evening or morning, high tide or low – the smells, sounds, and atmosphere always come together in a unique manner, and I take a small piece of each experience with me.

This photo was taken at sunset, where once again a completely empty sky suddenly exploded with fast-moving clouds.
