On May 9th, the W3C announced the formation of the Linked Data Platform (LDP) Working Group . The LDP WG will produce one or more W3C Recommendations that define a RESTful way to read and write Linked Data, suitable for use in application integration and the construction of interoperable and modular software systems, leveraging a member submission from IBM  as its starting point.
This week, OASIS announced  the submission of a draft proposed charter to establish the Open Data Protocol (OData) Technical Committee. The OData TC will define an open data protocol for sharing data and exposing data models interoperably on the Web. You may have noticed that IBM co-authored the proposed extensions for XML, Temporal Data, JSON and Data Aggregation (see the links at the end of the draft charter).
One might ask  why would IBM be so invested in two, seemingly overlapping standards initiatives?
There is an enormous variety in the types of data resources and equal diversity in the ways they are being used and accessed on the web. Linked Data Platform and OData each add value for specific use cases. Linked Data provides enhanced data integration capability, enabling easier linking of information from disparate sources. OData provides a simple, common interface for application programmers to access, query and update diverse data resources on the Web e.g. examining HR data on the Intranet or analytics results. Standardization will be an important step towards improving interoperability and consistency for each.
There are thousands of Web APIs being defined on the Internet. Standardization in this area will help advance consolidation in this important technology area and enable innovation to keep pace with market needs, in particular to support emerging data constructs and open data initiatives. The W3C Linked Data Platform (LDP) WG and the OASIS OData TC both aim at defining REST APIs to access and manipulate data on the web. LDP is based on the Resource Definition Framework (RDF) data model and OData is based on the Entity Data Model (EDM).
