It's cool to see people get recognized for their trailblazing achievement but the space junkie in me loved hearing about how her team's software dealt with being overloaded during the lunar decent.
We interview this computer science pioneer after her photo with the Apollo 11 mission code conquered internet

Simply amazing, even after all of these years.

The Eagle has landed! When it comes time to set Eagle down in the moon's Sea of Tranquility, Neil Armstrong improvises, manually piloting the ship past an area littered with boulders. During the final seconds of descent, Eagle's computer is sounding alarms. It turns out to be a simple case of the computer trying to do too many things at once, but as Buzz Aldrin will later point out, "unfortunately it came up when we did not want to be trying to solve these particular problems."

When the lunar module lands at 4:18 p.m. EDT, only 30 seconds of fuel remain. Armstrong radios "Houston, Tranquility Base here. The Eagle has landed." Mission control erupts in celebration as the tension breaks, and a controller tells the crew "You got a bunch of guys about to turn blue, we're breathing again."

Technology drives exploration and we're building on the Apollo program's accomplishments to test and fly transformative, cutting-edge technologies today for tomorrow's missions. As we develop and test the new tools of 21st century spaceflight on the human Path to Mars, we once again will change the course of history.

Happy 232nd birthday to my favorite city, El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora la Reina de los Angeles del Río de Porciúncula aka Los Angeles.

I saw a link to this in my feed and it reminded me how much I enjoyed Calvin and Hobbes. I should read the rest of Watterson's Kenyon speech sometime soon.

"Look again at that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every 'superstar,' every 'supreme leader,' every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there-on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam."― Carl Sagan, Pale Blue Dot: A Vision of the Human Future in Space

Watching this video, with the foggy fields, reminded me of taking the San Joaquin between Oakland and Los Angeles. I'm looking forward to the day when scenes like these are normal for California.

The number of hyperloop NIMBYs would surpass those against the high speed rail through the state.

Hmm, I wonder if there's someone willing to take a chance in Mercer County. There are enough vacant storefronts. Thanks +Tiffany Smith for having me listen to the story.
Abandoned storefronts in strip malls are common here in one of the largest cities to file for bankruptcy. But one abandoned storefronts plays host to a thriving punk indie music scene.

Besides spending their lunch break on social media, here's what happens when architects aren't designing.

Understanding that the dot of light is Earth viewed from the surface of Mars transforms an otherwise banal twilight photo into the sublime.

This view of the twilight sky and Martian horizon taken by NASA's Curiosity Mars rover includes Earth as the brightest point of light in the night sky. Earth is a little left of center in the image.

Researchers used the left eye camera of Curiosity's Mast Camera (Mastcam) to capture this scene about 80 minutes after sunset on the 529th Martian day, or sol, of the rover's work on Mars (Jan. 31, 2014). The image has been processed to remove effects of cosmic rays.

A human observer with normal vision, if standing on Mars, could easily see Earth and the moon as two distinct, bright "evening stars." The distance between Earth and Mars when Curiosity took the photo was about 99 million miles (160 million kilometers).

As equally realistic as Musk's proposal. If $6 billion can't complete the SF-Oakland Bay Bridge, I doubt you can build an untested technology from SF to Los Angeles. Keep the focus on California High-Speed Rail. #hyperloop #california #rail

<archi-geek> Posting to share Wes Jones' quick story, 1st minute of video, of how he went from West Point into architecture. Thom Mayne's t-shirt, Mark Mack's goofy hair, and why Lorcan O'Herlihy left NYC are also fun to watch. </archi-geek>

It came a little too late this year for my liking but 1-nil to the Arsenal is a great way to finish the season.
