Good Post-Election Analysis

So you're feeling anxious/upset/whatever after the election?

Well, if you've suddenly become concerned over unchecked Government power: welcome to the party. Some us have been here for at least 8-16 years, if not longer. I can't promise you things will get better any time soon, but I will promise you there are people out there fighting every day for you. They were fighting for you before the election, and they'll be fighting for you after you've lost interest. Consider tossing some money at groups like the EFF, the ACLU, Public Citizen, etc. so they can keep stepping up and protecting all of us.

In the mean time, if you're wanting to improve your understanding of what happened, and where we go from here, I've gathered a collection of useful articles (some from before the election, some from after) that offer up some really great analysis:

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/volokh-conspiracy/wp/2016/11/11/good-lawyers-dont-deplore-their-judges-and-jurors-advice-to-the-young-and-politically-minded/

Good explanation from Eugene Volokh on why just hating on the people who disagree with you is a bad plan for success.

Great analysis on how the Clinton campaign is still ignoring why they lost.

Hands down best analysis of why rural Americans aren't buying into what you're selling, and why they aren't who you think they are. Probably the best analysis of anything the entire election and it's from Cracked. Somehow this seems entirely appropriate.

Michael Moore was apparently the person least surprised Tuesday evening. The analysis he did months ago was spot on.

Ken White's excellent post on what happened, why it happened, what we need to worry about, what's probably overblown, and what the best way forward is. In particular, follow his link to the article on 'the other way' If you don't know him, Ken is a former federal prosecutor and current criminal defense attorney and one of the most ardent defenders of free speech and opponents of government abuse of power you will ever have the pleasure of reading. He's also pretty funny, which helps.

Actually a link from Ken's article, but he has a lot of good links in it and I don't want this one to be overlooked. If after reading all this you're still convinced the problem is a just bunch of evil bigots, then you need to read this: A story of how someone born into racism, essentially bred for it, groomed to be the next great racist leader his entire life was eventually brought into the light not by shaming or attacking but simple kindness, engagement, and an attempt at understanding. You need to think about what your end goal here is: Do you want to eliminate racism or do you just hate racists? If it's the latter, you're no better than the people you hate.

Hey +Anne-Marie Clark, opinion?
http://www.statesmanjournal.com/story/news/education/2017/10/31/oregon-mandated-reporter-salem-keizer-staff-told-report-student-sexual-activity-including-own-kids/798865001/

It seems like to me that the district is completely off-base in their whacked out interpretation of the law.

2015 ORS 163.315 says those under 18 can't consent.
2015 ORS 163.760 says sexual abuse is sexual contact with an individual who can't consent UNLESS the contact would be legal under 2015 ORS 163.345
2015 ORS 163.345 says sex between minors within 3 years of age is legal.

With all that in mind, it seems insane to interpret the law as "any reported sexual activity by minors is subject to mandatory reporting laws." How can you have effective Sex Ed. in High School if kids cannot ask questions based on their actual experiences!?

This is my kids' school district, and now I'm furious...
