The aim of this resource is to teach how Google Docs (a cloud-based office suite of editing and collaboration tools) can help address three common difficulties associated with teaching at third level:

- the increasing challenge of keeping teaching material uptodate on an ongoing basis;

- the need to increase student engagement in larger groups with students living in an ever more connected world;

-the challenge of coordinating active learning activities in larger groups.

On cloud development.

It can sometimes be difficult to explain the recent developments in cloud computing even to an informed audience.

I think the best analogy that can be used is that of an operating system. In traditional desktop or mobile development we do not worry (much or only in extreme cases) about the resources of our software: the OS gives us the resources pretty much on-demand. Be it more memory, disk space, computing power or bandwidth, the Operating System (Windows, iOS, Android, Linux etc.) deals with all these things transparently for over 99% of our applications. The app developer does not have to get their hand dirty.

Well, the cloud is moving in that direction also. Pretty soon it will be No-Ops everywhere for a vast majority of web services.

The cloud will become a vast resource handled by the Operating system of your choice (AWS, Azure, GCP etc.), a transparent machine where VMs do not have to be provisioned, where bandwidth is self-adjusting and computing power truly elastic.

Sys admin should start to worry...

HMRC (UK Customs) who is frantically preparing for Brexit is using a scalable agile process known as Safe for their new system.

10 weeks long iterations.

Quoting from their document:

"HMRC is using an agile methodology to manage the programme. This approach is consistent with government guidance and focuses
on successively implementing small parts of the overall system within a clear framework. This also means that detailed plans are not
prepared for the entire project but instead are prepared for each short-term (10-week) planning window."

In my days this what students had in their hands instead of a mobile phone:

It was an expensive enough machine.

And of course people still love them. I think mine still works if only I could find batteries for it!

"Padraig Kirwan, head of computing and maths at Waterford Institute of Technology, said he does not think 2018 is a realistic start date.

While the curriculum could be drawn up relatively quickly, he said, teachers in the new subject “would need to do a one-year full-time course or a two-year part-time course to be sufficiently skilled in computer science.”

WIT is already involved in delivery of upskilling courses for second-level maths teachers, which run for one to two years either full-time or part-time.

The college plans to devise a teacher-training course in computer science, and started offering coding lessons to local second-level students last year."

and in conjunction with NCCA report (which failed to look at non-english speaking education once again, a familiar pattern in Irish 'research', despite the fact that French Informatics Baccalaureate was created in 1969...)

A good summary of Google's current cloud platform offering. The pace of change in cloud technologies make trying to keep up to date a full time job; needless to say it is near impossible.
