On July 29, 2013, I was inspired to write my first movie review after seeing the movie Fruitvale Station. Please, please watch it…however you can. I couldn’t shake the film’s message from my conscience, nor could I wait to discuss what I’d anticipated to be an essential conversation in America. However, the post wasn’t widely... <a href="http://www.chicagonow.com/riding-the-waves/2013/07/fruitvale-station-my-first-movie-review/" class="more-link"...

Two Midwestern communities "ablaze" for two completely different reasons.
<p>Last week, while awaiting a grand jury’s decision whether to indict police Officer Darrin Wilson, I was lighting candles in a tiny convenience store at the intersection of Church Street and Dodge Avenue in Evanston.</p>

On vulnerability.
<p>What’s the most profound, fundamental lesson you’ve ever learned? For me, it’s the power of vulnerability – both admitting my own and respecting that of others.</p>

Only when I witnessed Restorative Justice in action did I see how quickly it changes communities for the better:

Private high school? Never considered sending my kids to one until Beacon Academy landed in our city just when we were looking for an alternative...
<p>Something amazing happened just after the holidays last year, when I found out about a brand new high school in Evanston.</p>

Wrote this piece about a lovely young actress in Lake Forest named Lindsay Teske, playing the lead in a show about bullying, cancer and doing the right thing.
<p>Lake Forest High School senior Lindsay Teske is learning some very important lessons as the lead in Clockwise Theatre’s “Captain Superlative,” the first-ever holiday show for the Waukegan-based company. </p>

I'm just tired of cleaning up after people.
On behalf of mothers everywhere, I’ll write this post without editing because chances are high that our families won’t even bother reading. After all, we’re the invisible souls of society. But, if you ARE reading this and you think I’m some hysterical mom who’s just lost her shit or about to get her period, you’re... <a href="http://www.chicagonow.com/riding-the-waves/2014/11/clean-up-after-yourselves-a-moms-perspective-on-feeling-invisible/" cla...

Amusing. Of course, I don't know why it has to have the "on behalf of mothers everywhere" spin on it. There are plenty of fathers in this same boat, too. Really, anyone who is codependent is in this same situation to some degree.

Pure, honest, powerful emotions. This piece is so strong, Jill, just like you.
The saying that you are only as content as your least happy child is fucking true.  I feel like a detective trying to figure out the causes of his obvious malaise.   Its maddening to internalize all the pain your child may or...
