From Cool to Exceptionally Hot Weather

Beach day for my 14-year-old Pug Whiskey and I before heading to Palm Desert where the weather is unbearably hot. I am used to it, however, I grew up down there.

Incredibly Strong El Nino Developing

What may be the strongest El Nino in history is developing in the central to eastern Pacific.

It is difficult to gauge how this will impact our weather right now, but it is looking very interesting for the upcoming winter and spring.

It's the middle of the summer, but it felt a bit like winter in the Sierra this week as a storm dumped four inches of hail on Interstate 80 around Donner Summit.

The Titan Tugboat in Coos Bay, Oregon

The Titan is one of original Sause Brothers tugboats and can be viewed on the boardwalk in Coos Bay.

What is interesting about tugboats is that they can manuever forward, backward, left, and right while pulling another heaavier vessel.

The Science Behind "Fog Tsunami"

New Jersey Fog Rattles Beach Goers, Appears as Approaching Tsunami

The shape and color of the fog bank appear as an approaching tsunami and more than a few nerves were rattled as the fog bank approached the coastline in Sea Girt, New Jersey. This is caused by high pressure compressing warm air down to the much cooler ocean surface. The warm air condenses over the cool ocean and resultantly creates a thick blanket of fog.

Look For Blue Moon Rising July 31st

A blue moon is the second full moon that occurs in a single month.

This lunar phenomenon generally happens every two to three years and we'll have to wait until 2018 for the next one. Typically the moon is full once every 30-days and the last full moon was July 2nd. Look up in the night sky for the next full moon or "Blue Moon" on  July 31.

Coquille River Lighthouse in Bandon, Oregon

The Coquille River Light was originally lit back in 1896.

It currently runs on solar power after being restored. Mariners have relied on the Coquille River Light in order to navigate around hazardous shifting sandbars while voyaging into the Bandon harbor.
