New blog on #parenting  and #childcare   #preschool   #daycare
A few days ago, Hugo (age 5) asked me to tell him what it was like in the old days, as I drove him and Jack to school. I was fighting sun glare off the snow, with part of my attention impatiently w...

Little brothers aren't always helpless. How Jack hurt his big brother and broke my heart. #parenting   #toddler   #siblings   #sharing
Hugo and Jack are about three years apart, and crazy about each other most of the time. Jack is 16 months old and Hugo is pretty much the sun in his sky. Hugo can sometimes be mean to Jack in the u...

My cat, Stash, died this morning in the middle of the daily bustle to get Hugo and Daddy out the door. She was 14. She lived with me through my young adulthood, divorce, remarriage and motherhood. ...

Preschool reflections on death and resurrection. New blog! #Easter   #parenting   #philosophy   #puffthemagicdragon
My son Hugo is four. He surprised me by his awareness and curiosity about death last fall. He seems pretty perceptive for a little guy, and sensitive - at least as far as how death would immediatel...

Here's a new year's update on the Silvers #parenting   #discipline   #workingmom   #siblingrivalry
I kept trying to write about Jack's new toddler bed yesterday, but I was continually thwarted. I will take that as a hint that there's something more urgent that I should be blogging about. There a...

what goes on in the men's room at stop and shop? Find out what my 5 year old learned about helpful strangers. #parenting   #publicbathrooms
I could write pages on the horror that was my trip to the grocery store with the kids this afternoon. But there may only be one interesting thing to share - the culture of the men's bathroom when a...

Jack started school last week at 17 months old. He and his older brother Hugo handled their daycare debuts much differently, and I've had to adjust my own behavior and priorities as a result...

Jack is 15 months old, and his personality has recently changed. A lot. From birth, I would describe Jack as easygoing, good-natured, mellow. Now along with his new toddler superpowers like ...

It's hard work being 13 months old #ap   #parenting   #toddler   #teething
Jack has a tooth coming in up top (#5). It seems to be giving him a lot of trouble. He was up for over an hour in the middle of the night twice last week, which never happens. Yesterday, he was whi...

I've been taking classes here in person and online for more than 20 years. It's helped me to discover a depth in everyday experiences that nothing else can match. And by hearing the words from philosophers throughout history I find the answers to my greatest questions inside myself. Ever since I first heard of the philosophy of unity (advaita vedanta) it just clicked with everything in my own experience. And meditation has been an invaluable gift.

We rushed my toddler here late on a Sunday afternoon when he was in terrible pain from swallowing something that we guessed was stuck in his esophagus. The doctor came out to see him immediately to make sure he wasn't in life-threatening danger from choking. Everyone was kind and professional. We went into an exam room within 20 minutes and my son had an x-ray, but he seemed OK by that point. We stayed until the doctor saw him eat something without pain then left with the x-ray on CD. Great experience. Then I got the bill and was so happy we didn't go to the ER- it was so reasonable. I'm very satisfied and glad we're close in case of unexpected illness when the pediatrician can't see them right away. Thanks

I've spent a lot of money here over the years and hadn't taken a pet here since 2008 I think. But I brought my cat in to be cremated this morning and was reminded why I like the place so much. They were friendly and respectful and I left feeling much better than when I arrived. I also found when my cat was younger they didn't push unnecessary shots (in the doctor's opinion). We'll be back again, especially since they are reopening their exotics department in August 2015.
