Here's the thing, progressives: the only reason you actually care about Wal Mart, is because they're the country's largest employer and they're not unionized, and unions have dumped a ton of money into shining a light on their labor practices. I do not disagree that this is a good thing for a variety of both intuitive and non-intuitive reasons.

But at the end of the day, WalMart is at least employing people in the local community, and collecting sales tax.

Amazon wants to do neither of those things. On top of that, their worker treatment isn't that great either -- this is a company that decided to start installing air conditioners in their warehouses not for the workers, but for the equipment. It's a company that at one point would rather shut down its California affiliate program than collect sales tax, and its a company that offered authors in its publishing program "increased exposure" if they schilled other books in the form of "reviews." It's a company that wants to control all retail and they're willing to do so by selling things at a loss until they're able to put everyone out of business. Just. Like. Walmart.

The difference is that, 1. Amazon is on the Internet and you urbanites shop there, so you have some brand loyalty. and 2. They have around 10% of the workforce that Walmart does, so unions and other advocacy groups aren't as willing to spend the money trying to fight for those workers.

Finally, over the next 10-20 years we're going to see lots of conversations about the regulation of the Internet Commerce. And the guy who runs Amazon just bought, arguably, the most impactful newspaper at shaping those conversations.

Don't conflate "being innovative and new" or "customer focused" with being ethical. I don't want "customer focused" journalism. Customer focused journalism buys affirmation, not information. Most of the time customer focused, innovative journalism isn't very ethical.
