“Philippine forces launched fresh airstrikes Sunday to drive out militants linked to the Islamic State group after days of fighting left corpses in the streets and hundreds of civilians begging for rescue from a besieged southern city.

The crisis inside Marawi, home to some 200,000 people, has grown increasingly dire as the militants showed unexpected strength, fending off the army and soldiers who went house-to-house in search of gunmen.” http://buff.ly/2rtQds8

“The Islamic State group on Saturday claimed responsibility for the attack on a bus carrying Christians on their way to a remote desert monastery south of the Egyptian capital, Cairo, which killed 29.

Egypt responded to Friday’s attack by launching a series of airstrikes that targeted what it said were militant bases in eastern Libya in which the assailants were trained. On Saturday, the military said on its official Facebook page that the airstrikes were continuing “day and night” and that they have “completely” destroyed their targets. It gave no details.” http://buff.ly/2s9pCgs

Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte has sought to reassure soldiers who might be accused of committing abuses under martial law, and jokingly said that if any of them were to rape three women, he would personally claim responsibility for it.

Duterte is notorious for comments often deemed offensive and intended the remark as a joke, reiterating that only he would be liable for any backlash over military rule on southern Mindanao island. He has, however, said he will not tolerate abuses.

British intelligence experts no longer believe another attack is imminent as significant progress has been made by police investigating the suicide bomb attack on a pop concert in Manchester, Prime Minister Theresa May said on Saturday.

Police hunting a suspected network behind Salman Abedi, the bomber who killed 22 people on Monday night, said they had made two further arrests overnight and that they had a greater understanding of how his device was made.

2017 Formula 1 Monaco Grand Prix – Qualifying – Saturday - Click below to read the full report.

A difficult qualifying for the Sauber F1 Team ahead of the Monaco Grand Prix ending in P19 (Wehrlein) and P20 (Ericsson). Since the practice sessions, Marcus Ericsson and Pascal Wehrlein have struggled with lack of grip. Different car set-ups have been tested throughout the sessions, but the optimum has not yet been found.

🇸🇪 Marcus: "In qualifying I was pushing to the maximum, so on my last lap I went a bit too close to the wall in turn 10. I touched the barriers with my left rear, which was enough to damage the rim. The puncture forced me to stop the car."

🇩🇪 Pascal: "Since Thursday we have tried to increase the grip level in order to improve our performance. We have changed a lot on the set-up side of the car, but we have not found the right one yet."

The Republican healthcare bill that passed the House earlier this month would nearly double the number of people in the U.S. without health insurance over the next decade, according to a new analysis by the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office.

The much-anticipated report cast a new shadow over the controversial legislation and is expected to complicate Republican efforts to get the bill through the Senate, where it already faces difficult prospects.

The Catholic bishops of Mindanao said while martial law may resolve terrorism in the area, its imposition should be temporary.

"We have many fears. But at present we simply do not have solid and sufficient facts to absolutely reject the declaration of martial law as morally reprehensible. But we are certainly agreed that Martial Law must be temporary," Cotabato Archbishop Orlando B. Cardinal Quevedo said in a statement on Friday.

Quevedo also acknowledged that the martial law declaration was President Rodrigo Duterte's last resort in response to the acts of terrorism in Mindanao, but denounced any abuse that may be brought by the measure.
