Huawei Watch  -

Anyone after a Huawei Watch? Stainless steel, mesh band, worth $650 AUD at retail. Basically unused, in box, shipping within Australia, open to international shipping provided you pay at-cost, which will include tracking/insurance. Let me know if you're keen.

Any of you dedicated Ausdroiders want a Huawei Watch, in stainless mesh? Came from Google, but we've got two, and we don't need this one. Fact is, we need the cash more than we need a spare watch sitting around. Help us out. Reasonable offers considered.

We'll have an official announcement later this week, but we wanted to share it with our most die-hard fans first (our Google+ community members!)

Ausdroid has dabbled with paid supporter memberships in the last little while, but we'll be closing this program and ceasing subscription payments. Allowing some users to pay to skip ads is a bit silly, when you consider that most readers who don't want ads will just adblock them anyway, and get the paid experience for free.

An option which deprives us of revenue too, I might add. So, the supporter program is gone.

However, Ausdroid has been running on fumes for years and it's no longer sustainable, especially in an environment where demand for our services is growing and growing. We have 250k unique readers each month. If just 1% of those readers supported Ausdroid with $1 a month, we'd have enough to be rid of ads for everyone. If some of those readers supported with $5 a month, we'd have full time staff.

In recognition of this -- that Ausdroid's worth is to the community first and foremost -- we're throwing ourselves open to the community and asking you to support us. If just a thousand readers pledged to support Ausdroid with the cost of a cup of coffee each month ($3 to $5), Ausdroid would take on a full-time, paid editor, remove all advertising from the website, and become better overall.

We'll be launching our Patreon site this week, but we want to give you guys the first peek. We're also taking feedback on the wording and options; let us know what you like and what you don't, and we'll take that on board and make changes as necessary.

In short, Ausdroid needs your help to continue to survive. We don't want to sell out Ausdroid to ridiculous advertising. We don't want to spam your inboxes with useless promotions. Please, help us to continue delivering you the best news we know how, and jump on board.

- Chris & the team

+seb mitchell indeed.. It's been the nudge that now sees SciShow (and shortly, Kutzgesagt) getting some of my money, too.

Hey guys, in response to our making the Ausdroid app ad free, many users told us they'd like to be able to financially support Ausdroid another way (http://ausdroid.net/2015/05/26/ausdroid-app-goes-ad-free-thanks-to-user-feedback/).

We've avoided going down this path before, but if users want it we will consider the option..

What do you think would be reasonable? What would you want in return beyond warm fuzzies? What should we use supporter funds for? Let us know.. start the conversation.

Some people are so frigging stupid it just ruins my desire to help people at all.

Offer people a fairly significant discount on a product, just because you can, and they start attacking you for it?

Fine. Fuck yourselves. Go pay retail and we'll keep the 20% discount for ourselves.

Well, you asked for it, and we're going to give it a try.

We've got Ausdroid Supporter levels now available. At this stage, there's three options which you can see when clicking through. We've got two perks for supporters at the moment -- ad-free experience on the site when logged in, and we will have some supporter-only contests/competitions later on as well.

The system is live. Let us know what you think, and support if you like :)

Understandable.
Need to get the web side of things smooth and stable before looking at a new beta of the app.

Not quite sure why it is, but recently Yappy Web has stopped working properly. When I click a different conversation, the address bar changes (e.g. the #phonenumber) at the end changes, but the web app itself doesn't change to that other conversation. Am I missing something obvious? I don't have an ad-blocker running or anything like that which would be breaking things.

Apologies if the mailing list subscribers receive a couple of sponsored posts this month.. with our growing traffic around MWC, sponsors want to make the most of it, so we've got a couple of sponsored mailings coming up. If you're not interested in them, please just delete them rather than unsubscribing. There's never too many of them.

At least, we try not to send too many :)

Just seen the first of the new ads hit my inbox.
Damnit Chris, why couldn't Ausdroid have run ads like this sooner???
Even on the Ausdroid website this would have been a better ad that that damned Konica-Minolta junk.

Hey +Chris Spencer, Dan showed me what's going on with your employer blocking Ausdroid. Frankly, what that Cheetham fellow has said is an outright lie; Ausdroid has no popup advertising, and never has. Better yet, we've never once linked to anything remotely like malware. I'm sure you know this, and we definitely know this. I'd be happy to talk to this fellow and see what his problem is... but like most bureaucracies, you're probably just screwed. Sorry mate.

I can't remember the last time I had such shit service in a restaurant as we just had at Taxim in Hornsby. Shown to a dirty table, tea served with maybe two tea leaves in the whole pot, and despite it being a yum cha restaurant, in the 25 minutes we sat there waiting, barely any food came past. This is the lunch rush time. After that time, we decided to leave. They tried to charge us $33.50 for two small dishes that were mostly rice, three small soft drinks and a pot of tea. Highway robbery. I refused to pay for the appalling service and crap food. After initially refusing to do anything about the bill, I threatened to just walk out and let them do their worst. They offered to take the drinks and tea off, after swearing at me and about me in Mandarin. It was under their card limit and they insisted I pay cash which I didn't have. I offered them card or nothing, which they reluctantly accepted. We won't be going there ever again, and we suggest you don't waste your money or time there either.

The Blue Gum is a north shore treasure, with classic pub fare, a good selection of beers and even cider on tap, and a fully stocked bar for those who like to experiment a little more. Food prices are decent and the quality is right up there. Recommend the pork belly and lamb burger, and the pizzas are generous as well. Sliders are on special sometimes and can be a little hit and miss, but on the whole the food is enjoyable!

Great food and quick service. Sometimes the bar staff can be a little slow, but they're always friendly and worth the wait.

There are many medical centres in Hornsby, but this is a bulk billing clinic with friendly knowledgeable staff. They operate a walk-in service but you can also make an appointment for the best of both worlds. Service can sometimes be slow, but that's to be expected in a bulk billing clinic. If you don't want to wait, go late morning. Other times tend to be busier.

Hornsby Aquatic and Leisure Centre is a welcome (re)addition to the Hornsby landscape, offering indoor and outdoor swimming, gymnasium, swim school for kids and even a creche. Much better than the old Hornsby pool that it replaced, prices for entry are low, and the place is rarely busy except for weekends with especially warm weather. Plenty of free parking underneath (for up to 3 hours), and there's on-street parking nearby as well. Staff are friendly and there's plenty of attractions for kids young and old, including an indoor waterslide, inflatable in the outdoor pool on weekends, and more.

I'm a fan of the Montezumas chain, and this is the last one in Sydney, and having been here a few times, it's great. Had a chat with the owner today over lunch (it was early and quiet) and they've been here twenty something years. The food was piping hot and didn't take long to arrive, and while it's on a relatively busy street, and parking is difficult nearby, it's worth it. Once you're inside you can't really hear the traffic noise so you can just dig in and enjoy your lunch!

Formerly known as the Hornsby World of Fitness, this 24/7 gym is now one of a few in the area, and while it doesn't have the newest equipment it is in an ideal location. There's plenty of cardio equipment and a well stocked weights section. Downstairs there's change facilities and a group classes area that's always well utilised. Staff are pretty approachable and the fees are lower than others in the area.
